With the M8's 1.33x crop factor it turns the lens into a 530 mm lens.

I also have a Komura Telemore 2x extender that (with the M8) turns the 400 Fern-Kilar into a 1,064 mm/11 lens but the Telemore is poor and none of the pictures were worth keeping.

Pete.

A few random, but hopefully illustrative, garden pictures from a US military 2 inch f/2 lens, likely aimed at aerial or enlarging applications, with aperture markings pointing away from the barrel. Not to be confused with the 50mm f/2 in M mount for the Leica KE-7A camera. Both lenses are Mandler designs, but entirely different ones. Interestingly, while the 50mm is an optically simplified (for ruggedness) 4e/4g formula, this 2” appears to be a more sophisticated 7e/5g, resembling that of another Mandler design, the pre-ASPH Summilux 35/1.4.

Just acquired a mint copy of Summicron 50/2 collapsible from 1956. HCB used it much for his BW works but the lens does well in color too. Here on M11 at f/2.

Yes, this one is indeed quite extreme... dense foliage is a torture test for all lenses – especially if backlit, but this is not even the case here:

Also, f/1.5 is a massive overstretch for a Petzval formula. I don’t mind (actually enjoy it...) the extra work required to achieve ‘acceptable’ (YMMV) results. The lens is better behaved when you stop down, although the edges stubbornly refuse to sharpen up:

Same camera and lens as above, around f/4

On a historical note, the Petzval Portrait is often considered the first photographic lens, soon followed by improved designs, such as JH Dallmeyer’s Rapid Rectilinear (possibly the formula used for this particular lens). The early photography days of the venerable Voigtländer company can be traced back to a patent dispute involving Messrs. Voigtländer and Petzval themselves. More recently, Lomography (kick)started their line of lenses with a couple of Petzvals – sexy brass, waterhouse stops, lo-fi rendering and easy/cheap to manufacture:

Again, same camera and lens, wide open @ MFD
