Good idea! The adapter gives room to a shim of around 2 mm.

But don't there exist extension rings for the M bayonet?

Yes, extension rings (adapters) do exist, as do close-up filters. But they get  too close, like just the coffee cup full frame at maximum distance. I have both - unused

Hello,

I guess you're using a M10 with live view then you'll need to combine two adapters:

this Novoflex M39 to M "Lei-M" adapter allows you to get closer with a  Leica M lens, combined   with a regular  LTM to M adapter  to use on a M camera:

https://www.ebay.it/itm/Novoflex-lei-M-Adattatore-use-Leica-M-Mount-on-Leica-ltm-m39-l39/303723839346?hash=item46b759ff72:g:IagAAOSwL-tfhLQv

I just tried it quickly evaluating distances  by eye on a M10   with a 90mm M Summicron :

Focussing on a 90mm M  lens  at a distance of 3m on the focus mark,  the object placed at about 60cm from the camera sensor was sharp .

At infinity with a 50mm M lens , the object was sharp when placed at approximately 40cm from the camera.

Have fun, Jean-Marc.

Jean-Marc, thanks. I’ll try to work that out for 35mm. I use shortish lenses on still-life in order to get some perspective into the shallow space.
It keeps things within tangible distance for the observer.

later: worked it out. Too thick for a 35. Thanks  anyway!

Then I'd use a +1 diopter "filter" whilst focussing your 35mm Summicron lens at infinity and adjust focussing  if needed.

You can also unlock the lens from the mount and hand hold the lens away from the mount to test / judge of the width of the spacer you need to "built" 🙂

Hi, thank you for your enquiry and I wondered the same too.  When I checked Leica's website (after I'd had to play 'hide and seek' and eventually found the 50/2.4 Summarit-M page) I pressed the "Shop Now" button and was informed that the 50/2.4 is no longer available.  It's therefore not a current lens as defined in my opening post so it qualifies as 'older glass'.  Just.

The 75/2.5 Summarit-M was replaced by the 75/2.5 Summarit-M in 2014 so it clearly qualifies.

Pete.

Ahah yeah very modern older glass :p thanks for searching and clarifying though, much appreciated.

Splendid, Keith, not only the composition but also how you captured the light limning the sheeps' backs.  Evokes Ravilious.  Is this a site in Wilts.?

Thanks :)

In Wilts?  Yes, it is the Neolithic Stone Circle at Avebury.

What do you mean with: "The lens seems to be semi-sharp when you can use focus peeking"? The picture of the cat is excellently sharp. The sharpness area of the picture with the boy could have been somewhat nearer to the camera.

Even with focus peeking some areas that should be "sharp" are not. My cat's nose and right eye are sharp but the left eye is not even though it is closer to the camera.  Like people were saying, the lenses were not all created equal. I was getting much worse quality of "sharpness" on my M9-P and it might not be all the rangefinder's fault. I have to test it further to be sure. Just my first impressions of the lens. It got here a couple of weeks ago.

There has been an experimental camera, that took care of DOF, in post! The Lytro Illum is an interesting experiment. In a few years the software will be obsolete and that kills the camera. But I can recommend it for a test. On Ebay there sometimes are offers.

I had a look at the cat picture again. The lens of a camera gives a picture with its maximally performance (sharpness) on a flat area. Whereby flat has to be taken literally. Not in the sense of plane, somewhat spherical is possible too. Nearer to and further from the lens the sharpness degrades gradually.

I live by 35mm and 40mm lenses on M10. I need to get a bit closer than the standard 60cm - more or less like the shot below where focal-length equals distance.

R lenses are perfect for this, but are so damn clunky that they ruin the pleasure of using an M.

Perhaps the simplest way to go would be to shim a M39 screw-mount lens-adapter and use screw-mount lenses.

Does any anyone have experience with shims? Is the adapter thread deep enough?

30", .76 meters.  Tricky with lens partly extended. The farthest approximate focus distance with the lens fully extended and focused at infinity (with the Kipon) is about 15", 0.38 m.

Well, since this is now officially considered "old glass"... Both taken almost a decade ago in Stockholm.
