logan2z Posted June 17, 2023 Share #4941 Posted June 17, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dumb question, but what is the purpose of a half case? If it's to protect the camera, it seems to only cover the parts of the camera that are the least vulnerable to damage.

If it's to protect the camera, it seems to only cover the parts of the camera that are the least vulnerable to damage. It protects the majority of the camera. Especially from knocks that can cause RF misalignment. Proof of how well it works - all my cameras that I use them with still look like new after years of use. (If that was the condition that I received them in. My MP was bought used with already a little wear). The shining example is my Fuji TX-2 (Xpan 2). That camera is almost allergic to paint, the way it sheds it with the slightest use. Just look at the ones for sale. Mine still looks like new. If you see how much Xpans/Xpans 2 are worth now in unblemished shape, that is a huge return on a $50 investment.

My question was in the context of M cameras that have leather coverings on the body. The half cases seem to really only cover the area of the camera that is already covered by leather. But I can see the need for a case on a body that is painted and has no other protective covering.

It's not just that. It also provides a level of cushioning if your camera gets a whack on the area covered. Which can help stave off damage. Yes it doesn't cover the top plate, but covering 75-80% of the camera can be helpful. I'm not trying to convince you to get one. Just giving the reasons why people do.

Protects the camera leather from my sweaty hands from being so nervous when I take her out. I wonder if cases helps preventing light leaks from the rear door haha on older poorly light sealed M bodies?

The 1/2 case is for people that always have on their mind that the camera will end up getting sold. They have to keep it mint.

The scratches on the rewind knob or the scratch along the top plate? Or both? not surprised. My silver M-A rewind knob is scratched like that too brand new out of box and my black chrome M-A has some paint issues.
