Which film m's appreciate

I'm not a collector, but rather an accumulator. All I notice are the outliers. The M6 (which one?) does not attract my attention.

Most Leica film cameras drop in value, then level off and decades later a few models are rediscovered as collectible and become insufferably expensive (and many are fakes, repaints). It is best to never consider a contemporary Leica an investment.

Condition is almost everything with the exception of a camera with a documented provenance, which is unlikely.

The only models I notice are genuine black enamel M3, M2 and M4s and only because I own them. There are a few considerably more expert here who can answer your question more objectively.

I'm not asking because I want to invest or collect but because I want to be a savvy buyer.

I come across various special editions on eBay and wonder if the price hike is justified or if the seller is waiting for someone like me to come along (or both because someone like me always comes along).

Special editions are speculative. For example, for some time the Everest editions were cheap but for reasons I do not understand, they became more desirable. In fact, they are not more functional, as most special editions are cosmetic exercises. Use 'em and their desirable is diminished. Condition is everything.

As far as recent-ish models go, a used MP is a reasonable bet to at least hold its value. They are also increasingly hard to come by brand new lately (I think Leica only make them in batches and few dealers seem to have stock at present) so a used example in fine condition might be a reasonable punt for some short term modest appreciation.

As you can tell, I've not thought deeply about this type of thing; but what's the difference between an investor and a savvy buyer?

An investor buys with the purpose of selling for profit whereas a savvy buyer avoids spending over the true value. At least that's what I meant :)

I agree with most of the above. I'm a savvy buyer and finally have the MP again. They are a bugger to find second hand at a good price. But I really like the chrome and titanium finish M6s I have. Buying them as cheaper as I did means they will never cost me money. The M6 variants are far and wide and many on eBay for several years now with sellers asking silly money. I think the MP is the absolutely safe bet here. Problem is finding one at a good price.

The OP is right about M6s. They are (were) the most affordable metered Ms. M7s are also in the mix now and arguably better value as they are priced similarly and are newer with some improvements.

MPs are in another price bracket on the second hand market and likely to stay there.

Special editions are at special edition prices already and not a good investment/smart buy if you actually want value for money, and to use them.

Most likely to appreciate and still relatively affordable: second hand black paint MPs and black paint M4s. You are unlikely to lose much, if any, on M2,3,4,6,7 in chrome (silver or black), but don't expect any real profit over the short term.

My observations FWIW.

If I could afford it, I'd but a new BP MP today just because :)

M5s have appreciated in the last 5 years too.

2lugs are cheaper than 3 lugs.

They still are the cheapest metered version of the M, and they have some extras not found on other Ms. It is a love or hate it story with this model. Also the original battery is not in production any more so you either need an adapter for a regular 1.5 V cell or use a rather expensive modification to use the 1.5V volt cells

I think you are jumping into a fox hole if you are approaching the purchase decision on potential for increase in value.

Having said this, i think could be reasonable to factor into your purchase decision the extent to which the camera will hold its value relative to the price you pay.

On this score, I would look to a very good condition M4 or M3.  There are many of them out there and thus can be bought at a reasonably wide range of prices, which opens the opportunity to scoop one up at a price that is below the general curve.

I bought an MP in 2005 for $2200. I sold it last year (10 years later) for $2900, after running 1500 rolls of film through it. I never thought of it as investment. I took basic care of it, but never held back using it for any reason.

It's been replaced with a BP 0.58 MP ALC. Its value may or may not go up, I don't know, and that's not the reason I got it. But it was certainly fun selling the previous MP for more than I paid for (at least in numerical value, I did not adjust for inflation).

Just got a good price on an MP. Will it appreciate? Hell I don't know. But it is a lot more fun than owning stocks.

No. It will not appreciate. If you want appreciation invest in mutuals for the long term. Mine have doubled in five years.
