Leica M 10

[...] My bet is Leica is preparing the bifurcation of the M system in two types of cameras: the classical rangefinder and a different EVF based M mount camera with a different approach for a different public. The M10 seems to be the first step: the classical camera. We will see the black and white model, the M-D model, etc. based on the same body. And then they will offer a different camera with M mount (and manual focus lenses) for people asking for EVFs, movie options, etc.

Makes sense indeed but i feel hard to believe that Leica would keep the M mount for the 'different' camera. As for the M10, we seem to know everything about it, except for one thing though: Why on earth did Leica need 5 years for such a moderate upgrade? The response could be found in the VF/RF according to my crystal ball but it's not a Leica ball so take what i say with a lump of salt ;).

I am moving away from Leica for my wildlife.

Not to derail this thread, but it would be interesting to know why.

SL contrast autofocus inadequate?  Lens selection too limited?

It certainly seems hard to beat the mature DSLR families for telephoto wildlife.

Cheers.

No - too heavy, too bulky and I'm not getting any younger. The probable lack of Video on the M10 is the last straw as it would remove a very useful addition for travel.

Combine that with the marvellous DG Vario-Elmar 100-400 and the newest MFT offerings by Panasonic and the answer is clear. I'm just contemplating the moment to put my Vario-Elmar 105-280 and 1.4x extender in the Buy-and-Sell.

So there will be no "M10 in Africa" articles ;).

This from somebody who started out in the Masai Mara in the late 80-ies using an M4-2, Visoflex  and Telyt-V 6.8-400 :(.

So for the price of two used M240s, you get a slightly lighter, slighty better M240 that allows you to buy a good accessory EVF?

If that's the value proposition, I'd take the two used M240s (actually an M240 & M246) over the M10.

But I don't think that's the full value proposition that will be on offer.

My bet is that ве got something else up its sleave, something starting with "hybrid" and ending in "-angefinder".

Either way, Wednesday's going to be very interesting!

Video could be under drive mode; just losing the dedicated button

If you're going to have video you may as well make it instantly accessible.

And while we're on the subject: I've never used the video button on my M and genuinely, honestly, forget it's there. But I see no reason at all to remove it aside from ideological puritanism and if it's to be there, shouldn't it be easy to use in the same way as we ask for the other photographic functions to be?

If it's gone, even though I don't use it or personally want it, it will feel like an unnecessary and misguided step backwards. Purity in this context comes from the perfect match of form and function, not from a deliberate reduction in incedental abilities ( that might be helpful to some users) that have no negative effect on the primary functions.

Just like flash sync for example, or B or T settings, features that are only useful to some users, their removal would not improve the camera or make it any more pure.

Keep the video button please, and give me a detachable EVF or a hybrid viewfinder and don't make me feel like I'm using a tribute to photographic ideals instead of a camera.

So it looks like the M-240 will end up as the most featured M digital for at least the next 3-4 years

Hmmmmm I think I will be in the market for a silver MP-240 . Any offers

Hold on, there is an amazing, much better featured new M coming within less than a year.

Well, if this is meant to be an interim M-D+ (Barebones with screen) it is not really  worth a party, is it?

Since the minority M models do so well, its probably better for Leica financially to drip feed a slowly evolving series of speciality models and only renew the main M240 do-it-all-in-minimal-M-style less frequently

And the best way to do that would be to drop the type-xxx nomenclature, call it the M as originally planned, and let Leica keep it up to date with incremental improvements as they see fit.

Let the other models have their M-dervative names, and break the 3 to 4 year new M(xxx) cycle altogether.

Makes little sense to sell M240 bodies with the outdated VF2 any longer. Unless the VF2 can be upgraded, which is hard to believe given the slowness of the body per se, it is the M240 which much be replaced IMHO. Then either the M10 has a built-in or accessory EVF, which sounds more plausible so far, or Leica will launch in the short term another M body.

For vacation etc. I came to the conclusion that Video in the Leica M is not that usefull due to missing IS. When I shoot private small movies I don't like to build up a large tripod, and certainly don't want to carry a lightweight M-System and then add a huge tripod for video.

So I didn't use movie much at all with the M. I do use it sometimes with the SL.

<<<<<I believe simplicity is a good thing for the M, I even replaced my 240 with the 262 some time agon and I am happy with that decision.

Huge tripod? I carry a light Novoflex walking stick that doubles as a monopod and it does just fine. Wedge it against a branch or gate etc. and it is completely stable,
