In view of Thorstens article I find the in 2012 filed Leica patent quite intriguing. Could he be referring to an electronic assisted focussing system IN the traditional rangefinder? The viewfinder is the real exciting point. How will it look and how will it work? In an age where everybody starts to love electronic viewfinders, Leica M users still (also) love the traditional Leica M rangefinder mechanism. How are they combined? Judging from what is out there from the SL on the other hand (see the skateboarding footage), it seems that the SL sensor/ hardware is capable enough to make the SL a viable insert camera for a car rig for example or some b-roll shots during travel. I have never been interested in my Leicas for video as a main feature, but now that I own 4 rangefinder Leicas, I'm really interested in the things that the other ones can't do. If I were serious about Video, Leica would not be my brand. As I'm not, the 240 is good enough for me - and for reporter type use, like secondary travel shots, talking heads, etc. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Leica have also been getting very serious about cinematography in the cine lens line. I own a very nice set of M lenses, and it turns out the SL is pretty good at video. In fact, it is so good that it made me wonder whether Panasonic's technology influenced the SL. Since I assumed that the M10 uses a modified SL sensor, it gave me reason to hope that it would be a capable little video machine as well. Again, not my primary purpose for a Leica camera, but a nice little bonus that if it were only enabled through a menu setting would take nothing away from the camera's simplicity as a rangefinder. So why not have it? I'm still hoping for it. I agree - it's the one qualm I have swapping from M-240 to M10. Having to take the 5D3 + appropriate lens on a trip will be an annoyance. My one hope is that removing the video from the M10 has been done to improve still image quality. If we're getting better IQ results from the M10 than from an SL with M lenses, then it's justifiable... If not, it feels like a lost opportunity .... Liveblogging (please!) from the event would help convey the mood in the room. I remember when the monochrome was released there was a lot of social media around. This is probably not likely but one can hope as I plan on purchasing as soon as I can get my grubby mitts on it. My M246 may get a little jealous though. Is there any truth to the removable rear screen discussion? I am unsure why this would be an advantage as I think the camera would look silly with an indent. Secondly, owners would be able to customize their camera. Those who want an LCD keep it on. Those who don't, who want the thinnest lightest most film-like M, remove it. It could have tongues at top and bottom. The top tongue slides into a slot where the top plate joins the body. This is where the electronic contacts would be. The bottom tongue extends into the baseplate and is held in place by it. The LCD is removed by removing the baseplate. Just my two cents worth . . . david strachan Posted January 15, 2017 Share #1717 Posted January 15, 2017 I'm betting on slightly slimmer body, aluminium top-plate, weight reduction, same battery EV improved and to fit in the accessory-hot shoe...an extra add-on cost same rangefinder viewfinder...no hybrid viewfinder ISO dial new sensor, one stop extra with new processor video will be a bit better, and will be available same front button for magnified focusing same price as existing M typ 240, same long time to fill orders These are the "surprises", and the new M10.
