IkarusJohn Posted October 30, 2016 Share #301 Posted October 30, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica comments that the lens is "similar", "modeled on" and "slightly revised", not exactly the same as the original. The point is that it's a re-release or re-interpretation of the original. If is was supposed to be perfect, it would be something else again. As for the hood, isn't it just the original re-produced? Why is it bullshit? The second hand price is presumably a reflection of the scarcity and demand. As you can't buy the lens without the hood, calling it bullshit seems a bit odd. I can't imagine that this will steel vast quantities, for the reasons you point out - the Elmarit is only slightly larger, it is better corrected, faster and slightly cheaper. That presumably isn't what this fast lens, to an old design is about, is it?
Advertisement Posted October 30, 2016 Posted October 30, 2016 Hi IkarusJohn, Take a look here Leica Summaron-28 -image thread. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
A miller Posted October 30, 2016 Share #302 Posted October 30, 2016 Seriously, no matter how popular it is, this will sell in very small small numbers compared with the 28 Elmarit so of course it will have a price premium. There is no economy of scale to control price in producing this niche-within-a-niche product of limited demand and Leica is not a charity organisation. At that price, it most certainly will sell in small numbers...
MarkP Posted October 30, 2016 Share #303 Posted October 30, 2016 Well I'm waiting to test it out when the local store receives them in the near future. I'll reserve judgement till then. I could just buy an old one. Has anyone noticed the price of the original starting to climb yet?

It just doesn't do enough to justify killing the pancake zen of the lens design. My opinion.

As for the original version, I just checked and the three on eBay look to be in sub-par condition; nothing I would trust. I paid $700 about 3-4 yrs ago, and I thought that was a bit of a steal compared to the then going rates. So I'd say the 900-1000 or so (which is the current price range) is normal putting aside the new release. Interestingly, the Leica Shop in Austria has three for sale that do not appear to be on eBay and look in fairly solid condition, particularly two of them. Priced at 950 euros... Have a look... http://www.leicashop.com/vintage_en/leica/leica-screw-mount-lenses/summaron-5-6-28mm.html

Sorry Mark I made a comment I wanted to take back.I asked if the old 28 was only available in screw mount .....forgetting about the availability of an adapter. Mark The most expensive lens is described as having "tiny haze and some cleaning marks". As William keeps telling us, if you then want the original hood it will cost half as much again. Add in the cost of a quality adapter and you are approaching the price of the new. But, old is old, and new is new.
MarkP Posted October 30, 2016 Share #312 Posted October 30, 2016 Yes I saw that although I'm not so fussed about the hood for this lens. Nevertheless I think it'll be new or nothing.
Paulus Posted October 30, 2016 Share #313 Posted October 30, 2016 Yes, as a technical matter, I do. It is a fact. Just look at the photos that are posted on Leica's website. They are technically inferior to any len in Leica's current stable and all attempt to demonstrate borderline extreme lens vignetting, which is an effect that lens engineers spent the next 50 years after the original len's release trying to eradicate. The one thing the lens IS is a design magnum opus. That is enough to justify the high price. If it is like the original version, it is quite heavy given that is made with brass (very similar to the feel and relative weight of the 50 DR summicron). So it doesn't make the camera feel light with fixed to the camera (I'd say even heavier than the elmarit). But the pancake size is just sublime. The Leica site is really short on details regarding the len's construction. If it is in fact made of the superior (and more costly) materials (incl brass) as the original, that would put it at a premium to the Elmarit. So perhaps as I talk through it out loud that is where Leica is coming from with their premium price.... It's a rather heavy lens. The new one. When I used it this week, I did not notice a real differnce between my summicron 35 asph chrome version during shooting. But maybe I did not notice because of the exitement of trying this lens.

willeica Posted October 30, 2016 Share #318 Posted October 30, 2016 "Tiny haze and cleaning marks" can only enhance the new perfect of imperfect... Agreed and, for anyone looking for a great 'old look', try a Summar. The hood is a very rare collector's piece, as is the original lens. I would not put any six bit codes on my original lens as it would de-value it as a collector's piece. Any 'issues' , and they are very few, can be fixed in seconds in Lightroom. Indeed as I mentioned in my article on the Summaron, I have some modern lenses (eg 24mm Elmar) with six bit code 'from birth' which still require some fixing in Lightroom for pink fringes. I am a collector and user, of course. For many people posting here a lens is just for shooting digital images and putting on a six bit code etc does not bother them. I would suggest, however, that they also acquaint themselves with the very easy task of fixing vignetting and pink fringing from any Leica lens, either old or new. Alright, I show my ignorance. Isn't 6 bit coding just a Leica thing?I shoot only Leica and occasional Nikon with Zooms. So I don't stay up on on the latest from other camera manufactures. ..... a littler education please.
