This lens needs to be used a while, so not love at first glance. I'm glad that Leica offered this lens in more modern 'character' comparing to the original, for me this new released Summaron-M can 'replace' the older one with 'something else' added 😉, nothing was 'loss' (maybe the filter zize A36 ? ).

I've used mine on the M10-P but am now almost exclusively using it on my M10M. I never was in the crowd that talked up the vintage look. My appreciation for this lens has to do with it's sharpness, contrast, b&w tonal rendering and extremely compact size. I love it. Admittedly, you and I are probably on a different page with the "vintage look." I bought one of the new 50mm 1.2 Noctilux lenses as soon as they were available and quickly surmised that the "vintage look" just meant soft. That damn lens was unsharp everywhere wide open and I hated it so much I sold it after just three weeks. No regrets on it being gone. Next time I want a vintage look, I'll just buy an actual old lens. Edited June 24, 2021 by fotografr

These expectations were boosted by you guys. What is really think about this lens is the following: - I am impressed at the image quality it delivers in such a small package. Very sharp, reliable image... - I am disappointed in the way it renders. Everyone told me it had a vintage look. I don't see it at all, vignetting aside. I find the image to be tack sharp like a modern lens. It actually looks a lot like my Summilux 28 at 5.6. This is not at all what I personally call a vintage look. I'm not saying I dont like it. Just that it's not what I expected. I definitely would recommend this lens, and I will keep it myself. I just would not at all describe to someone who's looking to buy as it was described to me..... Unless you’ve mixed up the terms Character vs Vintage, I don’t see why you would hve expected a vintage look. I have never used the term “vintage”, and this lens oozes character. If I remember correctly, this lens was always refered as having: -character -sharpness -excellent contrast -a lot of light falloff. -tiny And this is exactly what you’ve got, in a 28mm package. edit: The Summaron, which I also like calling the King of Mood because that’s what it is to me, could also be called “The Orthosis”. Why the Orthosis? Because in itself, that lens serves to correct the bad habit that many photographers have to simply rely on bokeh to make a shot “great”, according to them. This very bad habit of relying on bokeh counteracts the action of composing and actually causes damages to one’s photography. By using this Orthosis, you will be forced to actually gain an appealing image by means of composing an appealing photograph with proper depth of field. Yes, composing versus bokeh. The only added magic will come from the light falloff and sexy handling. The other perverted gain is that you will actually have your camera with you because it’s portable, as opposed to hauling a Summilux around, every day. It boils down to actually using your camera vs not using it. Edited June 24, 2021 by Capuccino-Muffin 6

I do feel that the vignetting and medium contrast does give the lens a different look to a sharp modern lens but because of its slow maximum aperture its not soft or glowing wide open. Guest Posted June 25, 2021 Share #1766 Posted June 25, 2021 Fast lenses from the say 1950-65 tended to be right at the limit of what was possible technically at the time and performance wide open were mostly poor or glowing by the standard of modern lenses. Steven interprets that as a "vintage look" but that is only a part of the story, the vignette and the less than perfect sharpness near the edge of an image is also a valid sign of an older design. It would be interesting to see a comprehensive comparison type review between the old and the modern version of the summaron just out of curiosity because i love the summaron anyway.
