I just noticed that with the current 10% discount in DigiDirect (a camera chain in oz), an MP240 can be had for A$8200, which is the lowest I have seen in the last two years. I also noticed a significant drop in the 90mm APO price since I bought it in July this year.

Good time to buy, I guess, if you are in the market for the M240.

This is 5680 euro or 6255 USD

Keep in mind that the M9 camera was discounted to $5500 AUD at the time that M240 was about to be released. AUD $8200 is not really such a great price for such old technology considering what you can buy for that money in Australia.

Assuming that the camera has a 10 year life span it costs about $2.2 AUD per day to own or about $820 a year. If you can get a used one at less than $5000 dollars but still under warranty you would be doing even better. I think that the new M should arrive sometime in the next year , I hope and then this one should drop further.

I think I paid about that for my camera when they first came out. Of course, the AUD was at parity with the USD then. I know of one friend who waited until *the price dropped*. Then the AUD lost 22% against the USD and the prices went up. In the mean time I enjoyed my camera for a year or so not worrying about fluctuations in price or whether my camera was devaluing at a particular rate. If I were constantly worried about depreciation I know that means I really can't afford it.

At one time I had a need for two M bodies. Now I don't so I an keeping my M-P and I am going to sell my M. Any "depreciation" is well and truly compensated for by the use and enjoyment the camera has given me since I owned it.

If I were replacing a lost or stolen one I think I would be looking for a nice second hand body. The type 240 didn't seem to have any real issues so it seems safer than the risk we took with the M9's.  A reasonably well treated camera should have many more years of life in it, I would think.

I am glad i bought mine when i did (almost 3 years ago) when the AUD was doing well.

I think it was $8500, although it actually wound up costing me much less, because i salary sacrificed it (sort of a loan through work, i bought the camera, took the receipt in and they gave me the money back, i then paid it off, minus GST over a year, out of my pay before i got taxed on it, effectively lowering my income into a lower tax bracket)

I might add that discounting is currently applied to all of the Leica cameras and lenses they have in stock (except the Q I think). M, SL and I saw I think an S-E with the Summarit 70.

I am already out of kidneys to sell but oh my that 90-280 for my SL......

there is a price point where something becomes ridiculously priced. It's incredible that the Leica M240 has maintained such a high new price despite being so old. The panaleica lx5 for instance came out at about $900 and after 3 years you could buy it half price. The canon mkiv almost the same thing. The Leica m240 has been remarkable as even on the used market it's hard to get a slightly used one out of warranty at the price of $4200 where it really should be by now.

It amazes me that an $80000 dollar landcruiser can be sold after 5 years at $40000 and at 10 years at $25000 and at 20 years at $5000. A Honda Jazz can be bought for $16000 after 2 years you might get $12000 after 5 years $9000 after 10 years $4000 and at 15 years $2000 and at 20 years $200. It's why I never buy a new car, I would consider myself stupid or spoilt if I did. Having said that buying a Nissan Leaf in the United states attracts so many rebates almost 50% and at 0% for 3 years interest free after 3 years you sell it and would have driven nearly for free.

What is the life of a digital m? It's ten years since the digital m arrived and there are still some M8 cameras out there clicking away shooting brilliantly. Those cameras are worth about $1000 AUD if you get lucky. But you would have to look at the price of the competition. What camera can you get for $1000 brand new? Is it better then the Leica M8?

So I am keen for the M240 successor and if it ticked my boxes I could buy it new assuming I will keep it for 15 years and just depreciate it.

  • 1 month later...

For those interested buyers in oz, just saw the MP240 priced at A$6929 in Paxtons. This price has a 10% discount (Black Friday??) of their current price of A$7699. Quite a drop in price in the last 6 weeks or so...

Quite a drop - they are still significantly more at my local leica boutique

Good info. Paxton indeed was having 10% deal which made me pull the trigger to go after one very expensive lens.

I bought my mp for AUD5k used but in 9/10 condition. Very happy using it since then.
