Melbourne must really be worth visiting because I've just looked for a travel guide on Amazon for the Challenge visit and it lists 'Melbourne Top 10 (DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide)' sites for £1,878.53!  (Must be a first edition.)

On the other hand the listing below it called "Wines of Australia" is listed at only £3.49.  I'm definitely not drawing any inferences about Australian wines from that.  :D

Pete.

I am going to book flight soon. Should be less than the usual 20+ hours or so for Euro visits.

To confirm, currently planned activities are Camera Clinic on 7th and the challenge is on the 8th??

Woo! Flights and accommodation booked. I arrive on the 6th and fly home on the 9th.

Staying just across the river at Travelodge in Southbank. An easy stroll across a bridge and very close to the Belgian Beer Cafe...Ahem

will be considering a suitable lunch venue in the Collingwood area, where CC is located.

Hi Erl,

I always find Cibi, just around the corner in Keele Street, really good for a light lunch if I've had to visit the Camera Clinic. But it's hard to go wrong for food in Collingwood. Looking forward to this very much.

I've changed my Hotel to the Southbank Travelodge. Looks like that's the spot.

I will be arriving Thursday, and will be leaving to travel back to Adelaide on the Monday.

Look forward to meeting you all. I'll be in everything... ;) including some good brews.

My phone is +61 413593014.

Thanks Erl and Geoff.

cheers  Dave S

Hi there, we've just got back from South Africa (see safari photo's on Facebook under "Photography by Tom Lane") and need to start planning for the down-under adventure. Would appreciate some advise/update.

Dan, Pete, Stefan; have you decided on a hotel in Melbourne, as if possible we would like to link up.

John (erl); we arrive on the evening of the 29th March and thought of staying at an airport hotel and getting a flight over to Tasmania the following morning, then coming back to Melbourne on the 5th April ready for the big event. (VB and Pies.) Everyone we've spoken to here says Tasmania is great and well worth a visit. Just wondered if you agreed. We would rent a car and spend time driving around ... if you could advise any particular places to visit we would appreciate it.

As we only fly out of Melbourne on Friday the 15th April we thought we could rent a car after the challenge and maybe do the Great Ocean Road for 4 or 5 days. Would that be too long?

Last but not least: would you recommend we have Velcro soled shoes, or magnetic soles to make sure we don't fall off the earth?

Cheers, Tom

Staying in the same digs as you Geoff!

Arrive Friday a.m. leaving Sunday evening.

Looking forward to it all. You can shout the first Hoegaarden! :-)

Possibly there may be photo evidence out there of Ryan Williams boss of LCA lunching there with Erl and I over a table of S,X and M objects. That led to my investment in the S system as well. Be warned. We had another enjoyable visit there meeting with other Leica photog friends too

Can I ask some questions to the locals please, as I will probably mix transportation - it is possible to pick up accomodation (Motels?) on the way without much pre-planning, when travelling by car, similar to the US/Canada?

Sydney - Melbourne appears to be one full driving day away from each other. The train appears to take even longer*. Flying appears to be the easiest solution.

I guess a car would be a nuisance rather than useful in Melbourne and Sydney?

Currently, I tend to plan to fly around and pick up rental cars at the airports, apart from Melbourne and Sydney.

Stefan

* There is even a sleeper train over night, where I have to decide, whether I care to solve a murder mystery on the way ( ;) ).

Several points to address:

Stray cat (Phil) has recommended Cibi for lunch on Friday after the visit to CC. I will also consult Laurie Rogers (founder of CC) who is also known for enjoying a good lunch, for his advice.

Tom, I thoroughly recommend going to Tasmania. You should be able to get a package of 'Fly/Drive' as the most economical method of doing Tassy. Some beautiful country there which demands you drive. Beware, Tasmanian drivers are lethal and I thought Melbourne drivers were the worlds worst! But don't let that put you off.

Re our official dinner. I am currently research a number of venues. High on the list is the Historic Tram Restaurant. More details to follow soon. Meanwhile, please consider if you wish to participate in the dinner, with friend, as I will soon be asking for numbers to lock a booking. I will shortly post a link to the tram restaurant and solicit opinions.

Gotta go walk the dog now. :)

I feel sure that Tom will be able to teach them a trick or two.

Please put me down for a seat at the dinner table too please, erl.  And a meal.

Pete.

Regretfully, the Colonial Tram Restaurant is booked out for April 8, so that is out of contention. However, for those that may be interested, a lunchtime meal on the tram can be had by anyone interested, on other days. The lunch trip lasts for about 2 hours traveling the rails. All reports I have found say the food and service is excellent and includes all beverages. For those that may be interested independently, you may follow this link.

http://tramrestaurant.com.au/

It is not cheap, but very good value. The website gives all details.

I will now renew my researches for a venue for our formal dinner.
