@gaytejano Nice one! I keep a database of sorts of published M-D serial numbers (why, I am not sure!) and I saw your camera was for sale at Roberts Camera Indianapolis last year and then again at LeicaStore Lisse in the Netherlands, so it's nice it has finally found a home and settled down 😃

I've had mine 18 months now and love it of course, a while back I tried trusting the meter and simply stopped second guessing it, and it's just fine. I know the times when you need to override it to avoid blowouts, which are the same with any brand of camera I have ever used: landscapes with dark foreground and bright sky above the horizon; small white flowers in a sea of dark green vegetation, etc you know the  score .... I started in aperture priority with exp comp to correct it shot to shot (and remembering to reset afterward!), then 6 months of strictly manual (educative, fun, easier than I thought and a great grounding!), and now I do a hybrid of mostly auto and flipping to manual for tricky light.

@pippy In other news, I found a new batch (49829xx) so that brings things to 17 batches of 100, perhaps implying a total of 1700 were made. However a couple of batches only have one example, and we found an example of limited edition M10Ps in one of the M10-D batches, so I am not 100% confident that all batches are all made to the full 100 ... so pinch of salt, but likely 1700 maximum can be inferred ... possibly fewer or even much fewer. I have now seen 127 'in the wild' for example in adverts, on forums and in EXIFs of published photographs.

Thanks @Datsch.  Appreciate the tips. I’ve barely had time to play with mine. Had it for less than a month and have been to busy to really enjoy it, but looking forward to getting to know the camera as it’s my first M. The one thing that I noticed right away is how difficult it is to see full frame through viewfinder since I wear glasses. Hopefully that will get easier with experience.

Impressed that you were able to track where it was sold previously. The man I bought from included the receipt from Leica Store Lisse. But the Robert’s Camera part was news to me.  What’s even more bizarre is that when I was doing research on camera, prior to purchasing, I found a webpage for it on Robert’s Camera website. It’s still one of the top search results, despite the fact that it’s out of stock. Guess it was meant to be. 😎

My advice, don't try to see full frame, just look straight and use peripherical vision to see "images of framing".

Easy to say but need individual practicing of course.

Practice a bit and see if this suits you.

Here is the PDF of the Instruction Booklet in both German and English. The English section starts, physically in the 'real' book, at page 55 although slightly confusingly in the PDF you will have to type 59 in the dialogue box;

I have had my M-D 262 for years now.  I bought it from Leica Store San Francisco, it was their demo/display.  I started shooting with Leica R in the early 90’s and switched to the M system in 1999.  My first M (which I still have) is an M6 TTL .72 in silver chrome that I purchased new from Don Chatterton.  I’ve always enjoyed the magic of the Leica.  As the years went by, and the film I preferred to shoot with slowly died out, I kept wanting a digital version of my M6.  Picture swapping the flip back of the M6 for a digital sensor…. Most of the digital M’s didn’t interest me because they had the screen.  I’m not a professional photographer, just an average guy with a mild penchant for things well made.  And I wanted the “feel” of film shooting with a digital camera.  So when the M-D came to being, I figured that would be the one.  So when Leica Store SF listed theirs for about $4200, I bit.

I put a black Eddycam strap on it and an Arte di Mano half case (in Rally Volpe leather).  The camera has travelled with me on my trips to Europe and a few spots here in the States, but I don’t use it enough.  A couple of years ago I sold my spare M6 TTL .85 (black), as 2 film cameras sitting on a shelf doing nothing but getting exercised occasionally was a waste.  My wife just demanded that I always keep my first M6.

Sometimes I think of selling the M-D… then I shoot with it and Wow!  It’s an impressive piece.

A Leica magic side note:  Probably a dozen years ago I was invited to the introduction of the new BMW 1 series at the Olympia Halle in Munich (one of my uncles had free tickets from a friend in BMW HQ).  So I went, along with a few thousand other folks, to this concert/show/presentation.  I had brought my silver M6 with me just in case.  At the end of the show, the host said that if the audience would like a close up look at the new 1 series, the BMW staff had snuck one onto the mezzanine while we were watching the show.  Thus, as everybody was exiting the facility, oodles of people were crowding around this little car with their cell phone cameras.  I didn’t think I could get anywhere near the car.  I pulled my M6 out from beneath my jacket.  At that moment, 2 older men with BMW white lab coats commanded everyone to back away from the car and waved me in.  They opened the car up so I could take some interior shots, too.  It was quite amusing to my uncle to see what that little red dot can do.  If God has a camera, surely it is a Leica M!

I've had mine since 2017 and still enjoy shooting with the MD. For me the most fascinating camera ever.

Indeed! At times I think I might sell it when I have a spell of GAS to fund the purchase of some new gear but that all evaporates once I go out on a shoot. The experience cannot be replicated and resulting photos have me questioning, "What was I thinking?" I've briefly tried other cameras but the M-D 262 cannot be replaced or replicated.

Has anyone had issues with dust spots? As much as I love my M-D, I keep getting dust artifacts in my images despite the fact that I cleaned it (both with Minolta lollipop and wet squeegee), to no a avail. Now I’m considering sending it to Leica. Any advice? Any idea what an inspection/cleaning by Leica would cost?

Thanks!

Do they appear in different places after a 'clean'? If so, suggests they are being moved and not removed. Try a 'double' wet clean with a couple of new and unused swabs OF THE CORRECT SIZE . Good luck, and hope you are successful!

PS If you are using IPA,unless its a new bottle it may be contaminated.
