I don’t own either a SL or X1D. But tried both of them on rent recently. SL’s EVF is just superb, nothing matches it, magnification is even higher than most pro DSLRs including those with optical viewfinders such as Canon 1DX II and Nikon D5. But that’s it. SL badly needs an upgrade. A camera at this price level has to have much more.

X1D has lots if software bugs and is too slow for my liking. I liked the menus though. Its easy to use and if it was not buggy would have been a good choice. Will wait out for X2D.

What I picked up is a Fuji GFX. Its what i would have wanted in a MF. With 2 lenses it costed me $10000, cheaper than what X1D will cost with similar lenses. I have never tried a Leica S and would probably never will as its way beyond my budget. Cant spend $50000 on a body and lenses as I will never be able to make that kind of money.

What’s lacking in the SL for you... beyond the obvious MP?

FWIW, a used S006 (CCD sensor) can be found for about $6k, and used S lenses are also available (but should have new AF motors). Not the most up to date system, but many here love theirs. And that big OVF is gorgeous. If and when the S008 (S3?) arrives, the S007 prices might subside, with increased availability of used samples. The S lenses, though, are the key for many.

Jeff the SL is seriously a slow camera, its 50mm is the size of a small refrigerator. Either the SL will be improved body wise or Leica "WILL" release a new Auto Focus Camera in the next 30 days.

Why? Because they must! They don't have a choice. The DEVIL will make them do it.

As a SL and M10 user, I've never thought my SL + native lenses to be heavy.

Rather I've always thought my M to be heavy, especially always fearful of it slipping off my fingers as it is not ergonomically friendly. More so when I mount on my Noctilux.

Get a Thumbs up or the Leica knock-up. Plus maybe a grip.

How is the SL slow? CAF is the only thing I can think of. Powering up, play back, zooming in, scrolling images, menu operations are all noticeably faster than the current Sony’s. The SL 50 and 90 aren’t noticeably slower than the Sony 50 and 85mm 1.4’s. The zooms are quick in SAF. And faster than the Sony’s, stopped down.

Slow is not how I would describe the SL.

I somehow like heavy bodies. I used to be a Canon shooter and worked on all 1d bodies and 1dx bodies, then a Nikon D5 and now moved to SL. I cant somehow like small dinky cameras like Sony unless they are heavy as M bodies. My only dinky body is a Q which I like very much as its still a solid piece of metal. But everyone seems to be shifting to Sony so I am also trying my hand on a A7III. Sony GM lenses are heavy and as big as L lenses

If you would see the result I can assure you that you would not be frustrated

John

The result doesn’t take away the frustration while getting there. My Sony RX1 produces great results but it’s a frustrating camera to shoot.

The X1D with operational speed improvements, a joystick for focus point changes, and some other small tweaks would be more appealing to me.

I want x1d body and sensor with SL speed, thats all I need.

I felt attracted by the X1d at least two times and just recently I tried it again. It is just not for me. The sensor is fantastic, as are the looks and form factor. But the handling experience is frustrating. Of course my older 2.2/100 can only be used in MF mode because its firmware chip memory does not allow for the latest update. Fast lenses can only be used with the electronic shutter. No flash. 300ms readout time. Electronic viewfinder is not up to a medium format body. The list menu looks like an Android UI prototype. Battery life is mediocre. My S2 (!) is so much ahead of this I cannot believe it. No issue focussing the 2.2/100. Amazing.

But then - for those wanting options in the mirrorless full frame market: it is coming. Nikon, Panasonic and now Canon.
