If they'd just add AF for the HC 35-90 I might get that instead. Bigger and heavier, yes but the range suits me (28-70 equiv) and I wouldn't need to carry the 90mm for landscapes. That'd be a 21, HC28, 35-90 and 135 for a 4 lens kit...

 

And I said I wouldn't but I folded and bought the XC120mm macro, now the issues seem sorted. It's bloody fabulous!! Not as good as the S120 when stopped down (hex boke balls) but very sharp and draws nicely wide open. Where the hex highlights don't show/matter it's as good as the S120.

I get the feeling that a lot of people here talk about the X1D in the same way athat a lot of DSLR users talk about Leicas.   They concentrate on all the things it doesn't do as well as their DSLR

Gordon,

How long have you had your XC120. It is a lens I want but have waited given the issues. I think there was a firmware fix limiting its focus throw if I am correct. The mechanism was basically destroying itself I believe. I currently have the 45 and 90. I am looking at adding both the 30 and 120.

You could get somewhat close with the forthcoming XCD 35-75 (roughly 28-60), which will have AF. Too bad though that it won’t have OIS like the SL zooms.

A couple of weeks. Only used it a couple of times. I waited until after the fix and immediately made sure the fw was updated before I used it.

 

So far no problems.

I know. But I doubt it'll be released on time (1st half of year). And it's shorter than I'd like. I don't need OIS (I'd take it if they offered) as I'll be on a tripod much of the time.

 

As I build the system it's be nice if I could use the old method of adding half a focal length. (ie: 21,30,45,65,90,135) That'll work with the primes but there's a hole with the zoom a bit bigger than i'd like at each end. If it went to 90mm I'd still want a 24mm but I can get by with the very good HC for landscapes. 24, 35-90, 135 plus 1.7x. A great 3 lens landscape kit. With the 35-75 I'll carry the 90 as well to fill the gap and that's heavier than the HC zoom, I think.

 

The Leica S30-90 is a fantastic range. But not a great lens.

 

1st word problems.......

I get it. FWIW, LR has already added a profile for the XCD zoom, so maybe it's not too far off. For me it's a trade off between focal length zoom range vs size/weight. The SL zooms obviously prioritize the former. I wish the XCD roadmap were extended so I would know if any other zooms are on the horizon. Two or three small zooms would be nice. I prefer native, weather sealed lenses.... never been a fan of adapters.

 

Gordon, have you had any glitches in your system....camera or lenses....that required sending in for service? I've been reading more unfortunate stories lately on other forums.

My door hinge has the crack. It's tiny and hasn't affected to doors operation yet. I'll send it in eventually. Had I not looked with a magnifier I'd never have noticed it. I had the glitch with the dials being sluggish but that's easily fixed with access to the *secret* (not really) service menu. No problems since I did that about 4 months ago. Had the battery drain issue but that was fixed with a fw upgrade as well.

 

So, so far (touch wood) the camera and lenses have been really reliable, except for the over dramatised hinge crack. The upcoming lenses all suit me. I'm pretty much a set customer for the X2D..... :) The honeymoon phase hasn't worn off for me.

p.s. I was doing some *testing* the other day. Put the Sigma 85mm Art on the EF adaptor. Wow! Just Wow!

Except the zoom, yes, they're the benchmark. They need a camera to do them justice. The 007 is fine but the shooting envelope is too narrow (LENR, short exposure times, single focus point). Leica are crazy to be waiting so long now there's some excitement in the miniMF world. They should be on the train rather than standing on the station.

No image stabilization and no joystick are my two main concerns with the X1D.  I could probably live with the fact that it takes forever to boot.

I thought the same about the joystick until I demo-ed the camera after a FW upgrade provided an innovative touch screen approach, which worked surprisingly well with my eye to the EVF. The menu can also adjust where that touch ‘patch’ is located. One needs to try it to appreciate it.

 

There is, however, still a back button for purpose of AF, etc.

 

IBIS, as opposed to lens OIS, would likely have complicated the size / form factor. We’ll see what the X2D might offer.

Are they still standing on the station?  Or did they decide to cancel the trip on the way to the station?  Or will they leave from a different station altogether?  I guess we will know soon...

The 21mm XCD lens, with similar recent LR profile, is now rumored to be released May 7th. We’ll see, but this could bode well for timing of others, including the zoom.

Yup, me too - so many lovely lenses how can you say no. The X1D is, despite its foibles, a deliverer of great images.
