jaques Posted June 12, 2016 Share #21  Posted June 12, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had the regular chrome 90 elmar- and it's a nice lens. Then I got the Fat tele elmar- and it is an awesome lens IMHO. Welcome, dear visitor! tobey bilek Posted June 12, 2016 Share #23  Posted June 12, 2016 Everyone has an opinion and generally positive about what they own.  Zeiss is probably decent,  expensive and if there are focus issues who knows.  Thin Tele Elmarits are not great at 2.8 and are a little soft close range like every 90 with tele in the name.  Plain Elmarits for viso work well close and far.  Tried elmarit 2.8 R when it came out.  I thought it was not as great as the 90 elmarit R .  Also tried later versions.  The largest Leica dealer in the country did not like it either.  The 90 M is same optics.  My favorite is my 90 4.0 Macro.  Sharp and contrasty starting at 4.0 and only depth of field improves at smaller apertures.    Check thin ones for separation in rear group as some are plaged with this unrepairable problem.    I have 90 Elmarit for iso. thin tele elmarit, 90 macro,  and 90 Summicrion -first "tele" version from early 1980`s.  I keep it for portraits.  Don`t know why I keep the thin one,  but I bought it because it fit in a small case..  You just do not kick an 30 year  friend to the curb for a few $. DwF Posted June 12, 2016 Share #28  Posted June 12, 2016 As Tobey said, everyone has an opinion and is generally positive about the one that they own; I am no exception here. I have owned all versions of the f2.8 lenes Leica has produced and am very happy with this early version. I'd used my friend's 90 Elmarit f2.8 years ago and loved the way it rendered so I finally found a nice one. It seems most of them come with some haze, but are priced very reasonably and can be cleaned  They are plenty compact and handle very well on M bodies.  So both of these are taken with the 90mm Elmarit f2.8 which preceded either of the Tele-Elmarit lenses. Both exposures are wide-open at f2.8  The lighting on the second one was tough because morning sun was coming in from the window from behind as well as to the side of the subject. This lens has some haze and needs cleaning but it serves me well.

How do I know which one I'm ordering / buying/and getting? This lens, the 90mm Elmarit f2.8 price ranges from $198 to $1200 which version which model.... Canadian or German ....... fat or thin????? I'm kinda slow in general but not where photography is concerned. I get  "Elmarit" means 2.8 ....But the 90mm  Elmarit f2.8 has been made from 1959 to 1990 (I think) ...maybe into the 2000's?   How do I know which version is which and which version, 90mm Elmarit f2.8 this its,..... so I can ask for one ?   If it sounds like Im frustrated..... I am.  How do you ask for  90mm Elmarit f2.8 and get the version that took these pictures and not  a different version? Without knowing the history of Leica it is no easy task to buy a used Leica lens.....You all are telling me which lenses you are using and I thank you for that ....but they all are labeled the same........90mm Elmarit f2.8..........then when I go to the used lens websights they are all labeled the same...90mm Elmarit f2.8....only the prices are different ...by a lot  What am I missing??? All I'm looking for is a great 90mm that is not prone to flair, has nice contrast, leaning toward warm tones........and I dont think I need to pay $4100. ECohen Posted June 12, 2016 Author Share #31  Posted June 12, 2016 Yes this helps....some. According to Thorsten  are there tons of variations.  I'll spend next week reading his articles and learning about the history of the Leica 90mm lens. Honestly I was trying to avoid learning about Leica's long history. I just wanted to add this focal length my kit.......without buying new.  I was hoping you all could help me sift through dogs......but finding the specific variations you all suggest will be no easy task. I cant even tell if my budget  should be $450 or $1200 for an 90mm Elmarit f2.8....I guess you all  "get" something I dont see yet.  All I'm looking for is a great 90mm that is not prone to flair, has nice contrast, leaning toward warm tones........thats will produce wonderful images. I never expected the used Leica lens market to be this difficult....far more than just the condition of the item your buying.....and the honesty of the seller  Good reason to just pony up the money and buy a new lens ...it's stupid......  but at least I'll know what I'm getting.  I may as well have just bought the 90mm macro that I originally wanted....at least there ......there is only one model.

lct Posted June 13, 2016 Share #33  Posted June 13, 2016 [...] I may as well have just bought the 90mm macro that I originally wanted....at least there ......there is only one model.  Hehe you'd not yet reach the end of the road as there are two different versions of the 90/4 macro . More seriously it is difficult to help you w/o knowing if your budget would be around $450,1200 or more. - if it is around $450, i would choose a Rokkor 90/4 v2 or an Elmar-C 90/4 (# 11540) but i have no experience with the latter. - If it is around $1200, i would pick a late Summicron 90/2 (# 11136) or Elmarit 90/2.8 (# 11807) w/o hesitation. - If it is more, i would go for the King Summicron 90/2 apo (# 11884) or the famous 90/4 macro you will end up buying i suspect . If so, better choose the first version (# 11633 on the left below) if you intend to use its regular metal hood in reversed position.  Welcome, dear visitor! ECohen Posted June 13, 2016 Author Share #34  Posted June 13, 2016 Oh hell no. More than one model of the 90 Macro too.   Im starting to get a comical feeling about the whole thing .....So what do I need 20 years of Leica experience before I can figure out which 90 to get?  Or just spend a $1000 and hope the the best.....and sell it for $250 when I find I should have bought thick and bought  thin? ...or Canadian sucks And the damn thing is magenta and not warm or flairs like crazy.....It really shouldn't bee this hard. Also it's not just the advice from here ....Its the web sellers listing that are not complete  There is only one 90mm F4 macro....isnt there?....Ok never mind I dont want to steer you all over this way

I want the focal length to use and enjoy.....I also dont want it to be too heavy to carry  but I'd give that up for quality. ...It is about the budget...but it really isn't...does that make sense?  I think your post helps a lot you gave,me specifics to hunt for ...I think Im good to go and hunt.  Thank You for getting to know me  "or the famous 90/4 macro you will end up buying i suspect ;)" Lets see what I can find. lct Posted June 13, 2016 Share #36  Posted June 13, 2016 Not sure you will like what i will be saying but i hardly see an obvious difference between the superb 90/4 macro and the surprisingly good Rokkor 90/4 v2 that can be had for more less. I mean at f/5.6 and on since at f/4 the 90/4 macro is sharper. But not by a huge margin to be honest. And the Rokkor is one of my least flare prone 90. Now if you prefer Leica, the Elmar-C 90/4 should do it as well but i have no experience with it. You could also find an Elmarit 90/2.8 (# 11807) for about $1,000 on e**y. Bulkier than both 90/4 but this late Elmarit is almost perfect besides a slight softness at f/2.8.

lct Posted June 13, 2016 Share #38  Posted June 13, 2016 What i call v2 is the 90/4 made for the Minolta CLE, not the Leica CL. It is a lens from the eighties instead of seventies. And it is a lens (superbly) made in Japan. Coatings are improved and the lens has not the sloped focus cam of lenses made for the Leica CL. Also filters are regular 40.5 mm instead of Series 5-5 that are more difficult to find. See below a pic of my copy together with a "thin" Tele-Elmarit 90/2.8 and herewith an excerpt or Modern Photography from 1981 about it. DwF Posted June 13, 2016 Share #40  Posted June 13, 2016 Evan,  I am happy to have helped but sounds like you have lots of good help here. The earlier Elmarit f2.8 does not have an M in the name as 11807 does. It is identified by a strip of Vulcanite on the barrel. And in my opinion from experience and contrary to what you might read, the lens is not more flare prone when shot wide-open than the Tele-Elmarit lenses. My experience is that lenses vary from that time period and generally it is good to take care in situations where flare may be likely to occur. My lens is less flare prone than my last "thin" Tele. The late version Elmarit-M is for sure least flare-prone of all but is a heavier, more expensive lens and I found mine a bit clinical so I sold it. That's me, ymmv!  If you search for an earlier lens, I would also stay open to the "thin" or "fat" Tele-Elmarits, also in the price range you mentioned. Be careful of oil on blades, or glass and other issues like spearation of lens elements, rough or too loose focus or aperture ring.....just take time to get a clean good copy  I found mine which is a black one for 450.00 on ebay . It arrived with haze not apparent or mentioned and I was able to get the price reduced.  Here is a link to that lens which is 11029 and 11129 in Black according to the link here..... http://aflenses.net/leitz-wetzlar-elmarit-90mm-f28-1958/  Good luck! David
