Instead of overly-complex Tri-Elmars, how about sets of Bi-Elmars? 28-50, 35-75, 21-35, 50-90? I imagine easier to design and more compact as a result.

Traveling with 21-35 & 50-90, would be sweet.

That would be a great idea.

I wouldnt even mind if it was variable aperture (50 f2.8 and 90f4 for instance)

Distortion can be corrected later (or in-body).

Only with digital.

Up to now Leica have to maintained certain distortion limits - accommodating accommodating those  projecting film or darkroom printing.

If you depreciate direct optical reproduction, then the lens can be designed smaller with higher distortion - with the assumption of digital correction.

My guess is Leica will allow higher distortion with SL and T lenses ( i.e. digital only )  but maintain M lens at their current standard.

Probably correct re: M demands. I'm not an engineer so this is all conjecture, but if they had to worry about only 2 focal lengths reasonably close by would the issue of a highly optimized design at both focal lengths be less of an issue?

A 90/1.4 Summilux please.  (Since Midland managed to make an Elcan 90/1 then a 90/1.4 should be doable. B))

Oh, and please bring back the 75 Summilux in the Mandler formula.

Pete.

I've been on a drive for smaller lenses recently, but a 35/0.95 wide Noctilux would be nice compliment.

I can hold a 35mm a stop slower than a 50mm and the 35mm DOF @ f/0.95 would be a little more forgiving than at 50/0.95 for tracking people.

35/0.95 would certainly make a great indoors lens.

I echo the sentiments for a modern version of the MATE (with true zoom a la WATE).....or, even better, 35-50-90.

If mechanical complexity is a major barrier, bi-Elmars in this range would get my next vote.

Don't be too surprised if you see a 35mm f/0.95 and fast 75mm....coming sooner than you might think or wish....

Leica is not crazy. They won't jump all the way down to a 35 f0.95.

They'll go f1.2, and 10-15 years later go down to f1.0, and 10-15 later, we'll see a f0.95. Each of these noctiluxes will have unique quirks that Leica customers love and elevate to "legendary" status.
