i dont get this problem if somebody wants to spend their own money for whatever he wants and can afford. Some people are spending thousands of dollars for bottle of wine at dinner, another are buyng the prestige car which lost 20% of its value right after you leave the dealer. Who cares? Is hermes belt is better made than any other luxury brands belt? probably no. is the leica hermes shoots better tnan my M9, no. but still, i would buy it if i could afford it. No money no honey. Period.

I agree ....But my question was.  Who are these people ?

Rich CEO who's hobby is photography? Or and here's the one I don't get someone who keeps it mint in box who expects it to be an investment.......I cant see these as collectible investments, because they are old or last years technology? But I guess Leica hopes to create a collect 'em all market?

So is that the market the Hermes belt crowd, where the camera is a fashion accessory? Why would they carry a camera they have a cell phone? Who wants to carry a 2 pound camera to the Oscars

I can see spending thousands for a bottle wine or a luxury brand........Should I be looking at this as this, as the  the BMW Series 2 is to the BMW I8?    the I8 has different features ....this is just ascetic  differences ...... a fashion accessory?

Which brings me back to       Who's the market?
I know who really cares. I'm going out to take photos with my plain ol' camera ...What shall I wear ....Hmmmmmmm  jeans and a tee shirt........ sounds right;-)

As i said above, those are collectors. I am not a collector myself but i have great ones around me. They may be artists, or not. Photographers, or not.  Car drivers, or not. Violinists or not, and so on. What they like is collecting. May be new stuff, old stuff, never mind they like that.

But my question was.  Who are these people ?

I have a beautiful edition of "The Lord of the Rings" which I was given many years ago, not a first but a very nicely bound special edition - which I have read several times and whilst its still good its not immaculate and I've lost the slipcase - you get the picture. Now I could just go and buy a paperback version from a charity shop and sell off the copy I have, but no, there is something intrinsically nice about the quality of it. In short its a nice copy to own and read.

Now I'm not a collector but I do understand that its very pleasant to own a 'special' version of something. Obviously Leica recognise that there is this trait and offer collectors an opportunity to indulge in it. I have no problem with this although with the same money to spend my choices might be very different. So these people are simple people who enjoy owning something that they consider rather 'special' I suppose.

Perhaps you need to turn your question around and consider why should 'special' edition Leicas be any different from any other 'special' edition collectable?

My cameras will unfortunately never be in good enough condition to be collectable, nor are they likely be battered enough to have a highly desirable patina; such is life.

then please do I'm always open to thoughts

I will also go with Pico. It's Amish. Although I am not discounting people outside Amish circle with aversion to photography. Market could be bigger than we can imagine after few glasses of single malt.
