Leica are by no means stupid.

They have been doing this for years and there is clearly a market for this stuff even if it sits on a collectors shelf. Iit helps sell already made M240 parts that are painted and sold at a very high price before the next model comes out.

This all gets fed into company profits which also benefits future R&D and helps ensure financial viability of a company that we all want to continue to be viable.

That's smart business even if I personally think such limited editions look somewhat tacky - there's no accounting for the punters taste but that's different to corporate stupidity

I have zero interest in this, but I find the criticism odd.

This looks like a special order - the Leica Stores in China (it doesn't say where), Hong Kong and Macau (both actually in China) are the only vendors.  How does this differ from the special orders previously offered by the Leica Store in the Ginza and the Leica Shop in Vienna?  All have offered special editions of current cameras in the past, as have the LHSA (if I recall correctly).

I'm sure if you organised 50 of your mates, Leica would happily make a run of cameras to your design ... for a price.  They'd be stupid if they didn't.  I see the Miami Leica Store is selling a 2012 "White Edition" M9-P with silver Noctilux (sold only in Japan) for USD50,000.

Yep, stupid.  So stupid, Leica is laughing all the way to the bank, and I guess 49 other White Edition owners are also smiling - the original price was USD30,000, and the camera the Leica Store is selling has been used (albeit only 360 exposures).  Hmm, very stupid ...

When you say selling, you really mean 'has sitting on their shelves hoping some mug will come along willing to pay what they're asking' which is rather different to selling.

Very true - maybe we should have a current market price section of the Wiki where everyone discloses the actual prices they pay for their gear, and a true market price is established by averaging the most recent prices, complete with trends ...

No?  I thought not.

Can you tell me who collects this stuff?

I could perhaps make up a whole lot of names and pretend I knew them all (which would be quite fun).  Google Leica Collectors, and you'll get a reasonably clear idea.

The Telegraph published an article in 2008, explaining why people collect Leica: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/investing/2787640/Investments-why-we-Leica-vintage-cameras.html

But then, I guess that wasn't really your point.

PPS:

Here's how I feel about that stuff. If some company or person has something to sell I look at it and decide I want it or I don't want it.

My choice. I would be pretty petty and condescing if I crucified someone else from wanting or buying it. That would be their business not mine. If you collect burnt atch sticks or cameras that is up to you.

OK I did a search ......What I get is the group of people that collect Leica, the old models .....That I understand. that's history like stamps or coins

Its the weird new, ridiculously priced boutique Leicas. Like this Panda or the Gold plated M or Lenny Kravitz or Hermes?

I know I'm not the market but this is kinda like collecting  Hummel Cottages? Or does Leica see it  more like collecting Fraberge eggs or Judith Leiber purses ?
That's the market I don't understand. Because you are collecting old technology......not old enough to be antiques or an object that has a a place in history.
Ten years from now why would you want a 240 with a Panda on it or a Lenny Kravitz ?

So you know I am very open as to what constitutes Art ...........I'm open to everything but these are like fashion statement fads.  They also appear to be marketed not to photographers.

Either way I think I'm done thinking about this.
