topoxforddoc Posted May 31, 2007 Share #4  Posted May 31, 2007 Mike  How old is your son and what does he want the camera for? Unless he were a photog, I would send him with something small, that he'll carry, easy to use and something you're not afraid to lose or get stolen. When my kids have gone on school trips abroad to europe, they've lost phones etc.  As for film or digital, film can be bought anywhere relatively chealy. Second hand compacts are going for a pittance. Digicams need memory cards and sometimes batteries other than old AAs.  Charlie
jdlaing Posted May 31, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted May 31, 2007 Panasonic or Leica point and shoot should do him well. Â Better yet.......I'll give him an Oly DSLr and you send ME to Europe and I'll take the pictures for him.
mwalker649 Posted May 31, 2007 Author Share #6 Â Posted May 31, 2007 He is 16..Dugby's camera is not a solution. Â I was thinking along the lines of the Panasonic LX1? Or I have a D2. I'm afraid the red dot might make it a target. He will be documenting the orphanages in the southern regions.
tommycrown Posted May 31, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted May 31, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) If Red Dot Can Be A Target In That Country, How About Panasonic Fz Series? Â I Have Owned Fz-50(same As Leica V-lux), It Isn't That Big Compared To D-slr. Â It Can Be Used As Pns Camera. Price Is About 400 Dallars Online. Â Best Regards, Â Tommy
lemalk Posted May 31, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted May 31, 2007 One of the really good Panasonic bridge cameras (FZ8 or FZ50) can be found for a decent price - anywhere from $249 up. Â The Canon IXUS or ELPH (depend on your country as to what it's called) are also really great. Â I guess it depends which issues is most important - image quality, portability.... and whether you're thinking of a small compact P&S or a bridge or DSLR. Â I still think the FZ8 (or FZ7) is a good tradeoff between all three categories - it's small, has great image quality and has advanced setttings that harken to a DSLR. earleygallery Posted May 31, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted May 31, 2007 Or of course you could get a Zorki and fit it with a red scale Elmar!
andit Posted June 1, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted June 1, 2007 Hi Mike, Â I've just given my niece (she is 13 and is just starting out in photography - she has a good eye) my Canon Ixus 40 (Digital Elph in the States). Any one of the Canon Ixus/Elph range of camera's are very reasonable in price, and produce more than acceptable results. I would seriously look at something in the 6 mega pixel range. Â If it has to be a Leica, I'd suggest trying to find a stockist who still has a little C-Lux 1 in stock or try and get a good used one. With some creativity these camera's can produce extremly good results, as well as being a great introduction to photography. Â Hope this helps you a bit - my 2c worth. harrisfoto Posted June 1, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted June 1, 2007 Take a few Holgas along to give as gifts, and and as a back up when it is hard to charge or download images.

I'm afraid the red dot might make it a target. He will be documenting the orphanages in the southern regions. Russia is a save place in most ways. If you attract too much attention YOU will be in trouble and not your camera. If you feel better without the dot, buy a sticker to cover it. The D2 should be fine - for a worst case scenario buy travellers insurance. For me it does not make sense to have a nice camera that you leave at home when going out to take pictures, because it is too precious.
