Did you use a special 'stop down' adapter or did you 'first stop down with a Canon camera? If former, which adapter?

dunk

Hi Dunk:

The adapter I use is a simple one without stop-down function, thus any EF lens will be shot in wide open. I know there is a special type adapter with built-in iris inside the adapter, but it might affect the character of the lens in my opinion. Hopefully there will be a after-market adapter with electronic contact to bridge EF with SL and to provide AF as well as F-stop control.

This is not intended to be a rigorous test, but it is what I get out of the files after a little postprocessing. The sharpness, details and shadows of the M246 are stunning - for instance with a with a far more densely populated Milky Way ;) - but the SL holds up quite well. Who knows what the next colour version of M will look like...

Thta's quite a damning statement that SL 'holds up quite well'. You'd have thought it would be a more significant leap in quality.

I'm not sure that "holds up quite well" means anything other than that the person who wrote it is biased to prefer the M's rendering qualities or was writing somewhat casually.

However, how would it be that the SL should be a "significant leap in quality"? Same pixel dimensions for both, top notch lenses for both, minor differences between the sensors, almost identical price for M/M-P typ 240 and SL bodies ... ?? How much difference are you really expecting to see on these two high-end, top of the line cameras?

I have both the M-P and the SL. I don't tend to use the M lenses on the SL, and I don't tend to use my R lenses on the M-P. What I see as different out of them is much more a matter of how the lenses render than anything to do with the bodies, however, and in testing where I've shared the same lens on both bodies the differences are so small as to be nothing compared to what a moment's tweak of the curve in Lightroom will produce as a difference.

I didn't buy either because it was better than the other. I bought them both because they are ultra-good cameras with unique and complementary feature sets.

The wording "holds up quite well" was, from my side, intended to be a positively charged statement :) . Actually, SL is my favourite body for colour photography. That monochrome sensors like in the M246 are in their own league in low light conditions or when deep post-processing is needed/wanted or for scenes with extensive transitions in light intensity, is nothing but expected.

I'm using an FD-to-M adapter plus M-to-SL adapter.  It's not ideal because the small diameter of the M mount causes corner shading with long lenses.

For info: The Canon FD 500mm f4.5L with the Novoflex LET/CAN adapter gives no corner shading at all. Not too surprising perhaps, since the Novoflex adapter is simply a tube with the diameter of the T-mount.

Please continue posting your inspiring images!
