A bit harsh, don't you think, Greg?

Actually, I think "composition, in it's wider sense, is more than just framing of the subject - it's also selection of depth of field, and I do think that lens selection has an impact on artistic merit - quality of out of focus areas, colour rendition (to a degree) and how the lens handles flare, vignetting ...

If that makes me a gear freak, that's okay, but I do think about these things as I decide which lens to use, or how the lens I have will impact on the final image.

Yeah it probably was but the poster I was responding to pushed some of my 'hot buttons' and the 'LOL' was more of a scoff than a friendly laugh so also felt harsh.

The idea that the lens you can afford to buy determines the artistic merit of your photography really bothers me. I'm not saying people shouldn't buy expensive kit or be a gear freak; I've had my own struggle with GAS as well (I've sold everything bar the SL and two lenses so I think I'm past it) but I still shoot with an obscenely expensive camera myself so I understand the experience.

But, if you will pardon the pun, there is  an important perspective that needs to be maintained. The moment you start to critique the merit of someone's work because of the lens they bought (and it's 'technical' performance as measured by MTF graphs or whatever they are called), I think you're on the wrong side of that perspective. Obviously I mean on a like for like basis; I think there is some selection of focal length for the subject and story you want to tell that needs to be carefully considered, but between a cheap copy and an expensive one of the same length and speed (you can buy very fast glass very cheaply if you opt for an old manual focus lens for instance), the results of the composition are not affected.

I also don't get the whole issue with CA unless you're shooting commercial work; does anyone really care or for that matter, even see it below say a 30x20 print (and even if you do, again, does it really matter?) Same for vignetting, which can be easily corrected in post anyway as can CA.

I shouldn't care really but (and I've said this before), so many of the posts on here are about obscenely expensive equipment and how technically wonderful it is, rather than a celebration of the subject matter and trying to tell an important story (truth, beauty and love). We get so overly obsessed with gear at the expense of much more important things and that ends up being a metaphor for how people end up living life; the values they hold and the judgements they make.

I almost feel like the more expensive your gear, the more responsibility you have to use it wisely and use it to try and tell an important or meaningful story. I know the vast majority of people on here won't agree with me but that's how i feel. Perhaps I'm being overly judgmental myself but I feel strongly about this point.

I wouldn't begrudge anyone for buying an expensive camera just because they can, and not because they have artistic talent to match.

I think the only way to go if one wants to improve the artistic merit of one's photography is to use flash, even for portraits on the beach. If they still end up looking flat with tomato like skin tones, oh, well, then at least they weren't taken with expensive gear.

Well begrudge isn't the word I would use. Nor resent. Lament is closer to it.

May I suggest that you consider using flash next time to improve the artistic merit of your photos?

Thanks buddy. My mum's patience is about to run out on the one of her but my dad would probably sit for hours if I asked him to! if anyone is interested in the lighting, the room is naturally lit by the big window you can see in the background with a blind drawn across that helps to diffuse the natural light. I used a Profoto B2 lifted high and just in front of the window with a 90cm beauty dish and diffuser firing into the room and angled down 45 degrees aiming directly at a large silver reflector that is placed right in front of the subject also at 45 degrees upwards. I dropped the shutter to 1/90th sec. stopped the aperture down to f/2.8 (50mm lens) and set the ISO to 50 then adjusted the strobe from there.

I also find this to be 2 great images. open and respectfull

How many flashes is best? I wouldn't want to be below par on this one..

I'd say use a Profoto B2 with a 90cm beauty dish and diffuser firing into the room and angled down 45 degrees aiming directly at a large silver reflector that is placed right in front of the subjects also at 45 degrees upwards. Adjust shutter speed, aperture and ISO accordingly.

I would ignore anyone who does that. Their opinion is not really worth thinking about. What they think is their problem. What you think about them seems to be yours. Why bother?

Who's obsessed?

Look, my response was to your perhaps intemperate comment that lens quality and character wasn't important to composition. It is, but that's not your point really. It seems more of an issue with photographers with expensive gear, no talent and lots of opinions. That will always be the case.

If you take a fantastic picture you're really pleased with and proud of, you print it. Some one else will get it. That's worth the effort. Your portraits are really very good. Why should you care that someone with less talent than you has more expensive kit? It's what you do with yours that counts, and what you do is very good.

Cheers

John

Yes you're right and you put it very well. Thank you for engaging and apologies for my intemperate response.

In truth there is a lot of other stress in my life right now and it's making me very cranky. Not healthy I know.
