The 180/4 berries image is very pleasing … and shows that the lens' published MTF data should be viewed with a pinch of salt.

Thank you!

I don't look at MTF charts and test reports very often. Basically, if a lens says "Leica" on the bezel, it's at least half decent and worth shooting with in my experience.  B)

An image showing the quality of the 24-90mm zoom lens at 90mm.  You may not be able to see it on this shrunken file, but the original in LR shows insane details.  You can see the hairs on the head of the bee.

Another image taken in the same conditions as the 90mm sunflower shot, this time showing the 24-90mm zoom lens at 24mm.  Details in the corners are sharp.

And, finally, an image in the middle of the lens zoom range.

For me, this one demonstrates 3 features of the SL: the accurate skin colours, the dynamic range, and the camera's great usability: I was shooting canal boats from the bridge when I looked around and saw this smiling monk heading up onto the bridge.  Within a second, I changed the settings to suit the very different light and captured him exactly in the narrow shaft of sunlight and sharply in focus, even though he was moving.  Small credit to me for seeing the potential shot, big credit to the Leica SL for helping me capture it.  None of my previous cameras would have caught this one.

..... my feelings exactly ....... and the 24-90 is such a good lens I cannot really understand the desire to bolt an R series or M series lens onto the SL unless you want 135mm and above or 21mm and below ...... and possibly the very fast M's like the Nocti or 35/1.4 to get very shallow DOF.

I'm off to Seville at the w/e and will be taking the SL + 24/90, WATE and Marumi +3 screw on macro lens.... and that will do me for just everything ..... and be just as compact and weigh not much more than the usual M gear I travel with ....   :)

Can you post a link to the original (for bee-hair peeping)?  Or a crop small enough so that it will display at 100%?

thanks,

There's a lot of photography at and below 21, at and above 90, and we can add macro... But I would prefer to shoot M lenses from 28 to 75 on a real M, so I can see plenty of work for both cameras.  Anyway, one of the big online photo stores was offering "accessories" at 50% off for BlackFriday, and it turned out that Leica R-M and M-T adapters are accessories!  So there will be options.

Not everyone wants to buy another lens, or wants to fork out another £$£$ having just bought a fairly pricey new camera. Or maybe the size, or the aperture may figure in the decision.

For a camera designed for versatility, it shouldn't surprise you that people will use it in many different ways.

al the Pictures without EXIF :-((

......... sorry .... this was deliberate ....... most of these were shot before the camera was officially released and originally posted before the Leica embargo ended ....... it's a long story ....... but until 16/11 my camera officially did not exist ....... and the pictures taken with it before 16/11 are imaginary .....

if you had followed the SL threads on the international bit of the forum from the start you would understand why ...... ;)

Hope I am saying all this in the right place. Last week got my SL from Red Dot in London, great service. I am not a pro but a keen user . So far I think this is a stonking camera, (stonking being a scientific term of precision a la  Erwin Puts as in  3.72 Wetzlarian stonks, )  a joy to use. Since 1975 have owned Ms film and digital,  and just about  know my Rs from my elbow.  The  SL is not big in comparison to a DSLR, and fits my hand well, and is  neat with an M lens . I prefer the way the SL feels in the hand over the 240, a camera  I have much dithered over but not bought.  For me the 240 has body bloat in comparison to Ms 1 to 6. The 24-90 zoom makes  the SL a beast , but less  so than equivalent lens on a Nikon DSLR. The viewfinder  is big crispy clarity, no its not like looking though glass, but its getting there. The zoom lens is a bit of a joy in its range, yes wish it was faster, but not a big deal, in this day of huge ISOs and if one wants shallow DoF then put on a fast prime.  I like that  I can focus closer than with an M, also its I find it easier to focus a Noctilux accurately on the SL  than an on an  M.  Snaps so far make me  like the look the zoom gives. The camera seems easy to use, though it did take 2 hours of reading  the manual , but then I am a slow study. So far, it has made me wonder why I would keep my M9, and it has made me think it was right not to get a 240,( but would not part with  my monochrome).  For  me it has that Leica quality of  encouraging me to go out and shoot, something I can't find in DSLR Nikons,  (but the old film Fs also had).

For me, the 24-90 seems an excellent performer, but I'm reluctant to carry it due to its size and weight. It's the same reason I've avoided mid-range zooms (beyond quality concerns) for years: they always seems large and clumsy to me. I'm much more comfortable using a somewhat smaller, somewhat lighter, maybe somewhat faster prime, and carrying two or three of them, than carrying one rather large, rather heavy zoom even if it does perform just as well. Of course, I bought the zoom because it does things with the SL that adapted lenses cannot ... and I'll use it for those things when they become the priority.

And yes, as Adam said, the SL inspires me to get out and shoot the same way the M-P does, the same way the Nikon F and F6 do. Sadly, the Nikon D750 does not inspire me the same way.

Hello,

I like the SL-Noctilux Combo. The focussing works better than in a Leica M under low light conditions. Here some examples - few noise reduction but (which of course not everyone likes) very much color (Fuji Fortia Emulation)

Best regards

lik

Hmmm

Well, I went to a welcome party for young Solomon yesterday (he's 8 weeks old and not as pretty as his sister).

So - here is his sister!

I shot with the SL and the Leica T 18-55 using face recognition - mostly using the LCD rather than the EVF - it worked really well, and I think the images came out well too.
