New Leica M in September 2016? The speculations.

How do know that video is not helping pay for further R&D of the still-photo "feature?"

Leica no doubt sold a lot more M cameras due to customers that need/want to be able to shoot video.  These sales I'm certain help increase the overall R&D of the M line.  It is silly to think that the inclusion of the "feature" to store the live feed off the sensor to the card makes the camera more expensive.  I would think that the opposite is true.

And, another poster mentioned that the space could be better utilized for other features.  Then, comments that we have smart phones for video.  Huh?  The electronic board in a smart phone is so tiny that I bet you could squeeze the whole board into the M and not notice it.  It is silly to think the inclusion of the video "feature" takes up substantial space that could be used for other things

I'm good with video myself and hope it is expanded in capability and quality on the new M... as I am certain it will be.

Ooookay,

All surveys I have seen points to the fact that video users are the clear minority of M customers. I have yet to see someone stating that they purchased a M because of video. So I doubt that Leica "sold a lot more M cameras due to customers that need/want to be able to shoot video". I would say that Leica sold M cameras to customers that need/want to be able to make stills by a RF with option to use EVF. A few of these also use video. The majority of customers were IMO annoyed by unwanted video.

I have many Nikons that do video,  750,  800,  800e  7000.  I did a short one with the 7000 one time to see if it worked.  It did.

No doubt many pros use this feature from necessity,  but Leica is no longer a pro camera.   All paid work is Nikon.   DSLR are more responsive  and journalists are kept back from subjects for security so longer lenses are required.  I have not seen a pro with a Leica in years.  Maybe why the intro of the SL?

I do wonder about the EVF inclusion in that statement. The EVF2 is really subpar, especially for a $7k camera and was when the camera was released.

As such it harms the M label and Leica as a brand.

Yes - but that was introduced after the M, certainly after the M reached its production stage.

Good excuse, not paying attention to industry trends when in development. Basing your product on what currently in the market.

Sounds like a recipe for failure

OK, so the M failed....

Yeah, pretty much. From a technical view, quite mediocre for a supposedly top flight company. The M9 was a greater innovation.

Ok, let me ask you. What absolutely new innovation the M brought to the table?

Look, the point is that the M rangefinder is a tried and tested design.

Adding bits and pieces to it immediately means that they will be compared with other cameras which will quickly move as the relevant technology progresses. We hear sufficient complaints about expense camera longevity already without built in problems which are when all said and done, peripheral to the fundamental functioning of the rangefinder camera.

Been there thanks... As i said, we must have been quite stupid then because none of us did complain that Leica should have used such or such EVF instead of the Olympus V-F2 for the M240...

Then when Olympus upgraded the V-F2 to the V-F3 for existing cameras...

I would not be very happy with the EVF-3... Do we really have to rehash this whole EVF stuff? - It has been chewed to the bone years ago.

It is what it is and it will be different on the next M - as the whole world knows.

Och, well, they sold a few and had some happy customers... The M9 was just a full-frame M8. Which was not a bad thing.

I'd like to add to my list, toast.  I really like toast.  I'd like Leica to work on something that would provide a way the camera could make toast, I mean, really good toast.  I'm sure everyone would agree that toast is good... never met anybody that didn't like toast, right?

Rick

I would wait for the Limited Edition Toast with no dot and ascetically positioned mould...
