ShivaYash Posted September 22, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 22, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Argh! I dropped my lens. It was wrapped in a lens pouch, which was in my coat pocket. I went to the loo and hung my coat on the door hook in the cubicle. I missed the hook and the coat dropped. Immediately inspect the lens as I heard the crack... Everything seems fine and the focus is still spot on, but, the focus tab took a hit. It's not too bad but Leica Mayfair said it would need a base to Germany for this to be replaced. Annoying but this will have to wait following my four month trip to Australia. Feeling pretty silly.

Tony Mac Posted September 23, 2015 Share #6 Posted September 23, 2015 It tired to FLEe because you called it a FAG. Don't call it politically incorrect things and it won't fall out of your coat!

Manoleica Posted September 23, 2015 Share #8 Posted September 23, 2015 Don't get Bog'd down.. (Pun) if the lens performs ok then use it on your upcoming vacation. Wetzlar will still be there next year.. After your vacation you could always ask an Aussie dealer to ship it to Wetzlar for you.. It's a terrible feeling as the milliseconds tick by and the horrible thud occurrs... I'm sure all of us at some point have experienced something similar.. Take Care, be safe & enjoy your travels.. MarkP Posted September 23, 2015 Share #11 Posted September 23, 2015 It would be easier and faster I think to have it sent from the UK when you're back than via Camera Clinic/Leica Australia. Give it a good test to make sure nothing is out of alignment or it's not mis-focusing before you travel with it. And yes, what does FAG mean? Unless this is an expletive you used after dropping it you must mean FLE which is the correct and accepted description (incl by Leica) of the floating element? TheGodParticle/Hari Posted September 23, 2015 Share #13 Posted September 23, 2015 I suspect the "FAG" usage is coming out of ShivaYash's browsing time on Ken Rockwell's site. A Google search for Leica 35 FAG resulted in this "Name Leica calls this the LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH, number 11 663. It has floating elements, unlike its predecessor, number 11 874. It is also called the neue (new) LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Since it has the same name engraved into it as the previous lens, and LEICA has no different formal name for it, laymen will be creating all sorts of street names for it, like FLE (floating lens element), FE (floating element), Version 2 or Version 3, or whatever. This is funny, because it has no floating element: the entire rear unit floats together as a unit! Since it's actually a Floating Aspherical Group as we see below, the proper appellation is LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH FAG, which is probably why LEICA has chosen not to name it anything different from the excellent previous LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH." ShivaYash Posted September 23, 2015 Author Share #14 Posted September 23, 2015 Thanks for all the warm wishes in this thread. I will have it checked by Mayfair before I depart... but to me the focus seems spot on. Yes the thud/ crack sound was really horrible. The aperture ring is a little too loose for me to it needs to go back in any case, post Australia. With best, FAG user ;-)
lct Posted September 23, 2015 Share #15 Posted September 23, 2015 In short it's only KR's fault if a fag happened to drop in a loo.

Adrian Lord Posted September 23, 2015 Share #19 Posted September 23, 2015 Reminds me of the time I gave my wife my M2 with 21mm f2.8 to look after while I went on the rollercoaster at California park in L.A. Got off it to find the M2 destroyed beyond repair and the 21 needing Wetzlar repair. She had taken it on a carousel and it had been subject to a very heavy blow or 4. I was incandescent. Erik Gunst Lund Posted September 23, 2015 Share #20 Posted September 23, 2015 The focus tap is very tough 'plastic' so this lens got a pretty hard blow when hitting the bog floor... Imagine holding the lens loosely in the palm of your hand and giving it a blow with a hammer as hard as it takes to deform the focus tap like that, afterwards rethink if noting inside has been damaged,,, you bet things have happened inside, decentering, focus ring deformed,,,
