Berlin - Tempelhof

(Berliners thought they would not need this historical place as an airport anymore.

Therefore it is now an Ex-Airport).

Berlin Philharmonie interior shortly before a concert.  Incidentally, the programme was Schubert's 5th symphony followed by Shostakovitch's 15th symphony which was ably conducted by Bernard Haitink.  The acoustic was excellent.

Brandenburg Gate.  I am afraid paraphernalia close by from showing the Dortmund vs Wolfsburg match prevented me from photographing the whole structure

Fabulous thread!

I am going to Berlin next week with my son (15). Not having been to Berlin before, we will want to see all the obvious landmarks in the city over two or three days.

Unfortunately, there is a very wide choice of hotels and I have no idea which areas to aim for and which to avoid in terms of location. I don't want a long commute or be stuck near a motorway. Something with nice local restaurants and shops would be ideal.

Any recommendations for something central so we can walk to the majority of places we would visit?

Apologies for the naivety of the question..!

Thanks in advance.

I very much like the Melia in Berlin. It is located at Friedrichstraße and the river Spree.

The breakfast is quite expensive but there are some nice Cafés located at the river.

Enjoy your trip!

I stayed in the Hotel Park Consul (3 stars) in the Alt-Moabit part of the city and thought it was good value.  If you are travelling light you can walk to it in about 20-25 minutes from the main Central railway station (Hauptbahnhof). It is also close (within about 100 m) to Turmstrasse underground station and you are not that far off Tiergarten Park.  Alt-Moabit appeared to be an interesting area of the city where many working Berliners seemed to live and I enjoyed that aspect rather than staying in a more upmarket part of the city with more expensive hotels.
