Memories...Hard to believe, given Chicago's skyline today, but in the reflection, the 41-story Prudential Building to the right of the tall white Aon Center (originally the Amoco Building, notable for shedding its original marble cladding) had the tallest roofline in Chicago when completed in the mid-1950s.

Also note that there were few buildings, and no tall buildings built for about twenty years before the Prudential was begun. It was, as I remember a very big event to see this monumental construction take shape.

The cost to remove the marble and replace it with granite on the exterior of the Amoco building was about 100 Million, nearly the cost of the original building. In any cemetery we can see thin marble slab tombstones that have warped and pitted from exposure to the elements and heating and cooling from the sun. The same thing happened on the building faces, deteriorating much sooner than the 40 to 50 years that the building was expected to remain serviceable.
