Hi

Late to the party, but if you were to put Jono Slack in to a corner, looking at his post in the Leica Meet Facebook page, you may have your answer .

Just speculating like everyone else ?

Mike

Exactly. Add to that the interesting blurry photo posted by Dr. Kaufmann and his answer that he couldn't say what he knows :)

So, we're all reasonably confident there will be a new full frame AF system camera in the next month or so.  There's only so much we can speculate about till we see what is on offer.

In that context, what will the new M look like?

I doubt very much the camera will go backwards from the M(240), which will presumably continue as the next iteration of the M-E along with the Monochrom version. So, the new M?  I also don't see it getting tanner, or Leica discontinuing the accessories they offer - same battery etc. What about these:

  • Better EVF - I don't buy the new rangefinder mechanism for a minute. It will continue to use the excellent upgrade of the optical view finder
  • New sensor from Tower - more MP?  Not sure why. Better dynamic range and high ISO performance
  • Better video with 4K and audio jack?
  • New processor
  • Burst rates
  • New body design, leaving the baseplate behind
  • New EVF, with the ability to upgrade (I think this was a scandal - Nikon made cameras which would take all its legacy lenses, and Leica didn't foresee that a better EVF might become available while people still wanted to continue to use their M(240)s)

Exactly how will the M be improved, other than being able to reprogramme the video button?  I'd be very surprised if they offer a production version of the Edition 60, but this is Leica we're talking about - if they offered a thread mount for the shutter release and the ability to clip on the EVF, it might gain some acceptance.

Thank you much. I can't seem to read the Excel file sorry. Apart from the name "Leica SL (Type 601)" and that of the li-ion battery ("BP-SCL4") did you get any information about this camera? Just curious.

Yes we do. As I wrote in my first message, we have:

- the Russian certification from mid-August: http://novocert.ru/Documents/Document.aspx?Id=4797373

- an excerpt from the Chinese certification: http://www.miit.gov.cn/n11293472/n11293832/n12845605/n13916943/n16832483.files/n16832455.xls (see line 1061)

There is space for a "new M" ... to frame through OVF I think is a feel still hard to renonce definitely... the obvious development are in the sensor (if they have one new, the "Tower", on the new EVIL-SL, probably it can be adapted to M specs via a proper microlenses'set) and in the EVF; I am curios to see if they will implement the new "electronic assisted RF" that has been speculated...

I suspect that my bank account may not be able to afford the camera if the cost is $8,ooo with a 50mm Summicron lens included in the price.

Rich

Be confident... without the Summicron could be a bit less...   :(  :D (who of us hasn't at least ONE Summicron 50 ? I have four, and consider my 1980's item as "the new one"... B) )

'SL' is both:

- a reference to the Leicaflex SL, i.e a 24x36 camera with a viewfinder on top (think Fujifilm X-T1 or Olympus OM-D E-M1)

- a reference to SLR: its a SL non R, a Single Lens camera (i.e. a system camera) which is not a Reflex, i.e. a mirrorless camera with an EVF

- an S 'leicht' , a baby S, a S with a smaller, 24x36 sensor.

Before everyone gets all hyped up about the SL - Read this.

http://thenewcamera.com/leica-sl-typ601-new-medium-format-camera-coming/

Looks like new medium format not 35mm.

Medium format? That would be very hard to believe that Leica would introduce a new model in the S medium format segment.

But a 35 mm FF camera with AF makes sense if it has some outstanding feature(s) compared to competitors. As it looks now, that something special might be a 60 MP sensor.

I just don't get the naming format. A 60MP sensor would be interesting esp. in a Mirrorless. I would be so excited about buying into a new lens collection though.

If the Leica M Typ 240 is 24 megapixels, can we infer from Leica's naming convention that the Leica SL Typ 601 is 60 megapixels?

Quite obviously we cannot as the Typ number of a Leica camera is in no way related to the number of megapixels. Draw up a graph with the Typ numbers on one axis and the number of megapixels on the other and see for yourself.
