The only valid reason to revive the ‘R’ designation would be a revival of the R system. Which won’t happen. Using ‘R’ for anything else would be a seriously bad idea – much worse even than touting the X Vario as a ‘Mini M’.

"Mini M" was really really a bad idea. Everyone was expecting something like the CL, which was the original "Mini M" concept. The X vario has a completely different concept - that was the problem.

With the R it would be different, if the new system is Leicas interpretation of a X-T1 or Alpha 7, the concept would be the same. It could be used for the same kind of photography. It's like the Visoflex which technically lost the "flex" but remains the concept.

We all know that Leica Camera strives for a three-year product cycle with their digital cameras—and so far, they basically did exactly that. At least in terms of announcements, if not always in terms of actual delivery.

The Leica M (Typ 240) was announced in September 2012 at Photokina. Three years later is September 2015—i. e. right now. Hence the M (Typ 240)'s successor can be expected to be announced this month or the next.

And I wouldn't be too surprised if there's more to be announced than just the next M model ...

They're fine with R wides, or any other lens that is far enough from the sensor to clear a moving mirror.

Are you sure of this? I hav seen smeared corners with a Summicron-R 35 on this very forum. Was not encouraging about 21mm or 28mm lenses...

Yes, wildlightphoto is right. I tried several SLR lenses, zooms and primes, with various focal lengths down to 12 mm (Sigma AF 12-24 mm EX DG), and all of them are performing just fine on the M (Typ 240).

My only SLR lens unusable on the Leica M is the Minolta W.Rokkor-PI 21 mm 1:4.5, a Super-Angulon type of lens with a very short back-focus distance which is meant to be used on an SLR camera with the mirror locked up and an accessory finder.

Not necessarily, although of course possible.  This was discussed earlier in the thread, see page 37.  The point about photokina years is relevant.

Oh, maybe Leica will just issue a "Victoria's Secret Special Edition", whatever spec it will have!
