NEW M.. This year.. This Fall...

So, the SL is not the new M: no surprise there then. But will we really have to wait until Photokina 2016 before Leica announces an M with a similarly decent accessory EVF?

My guess is yes.

However, more interestingly, to me at least, is whether they'll stick with the OVF or bite the bullet and go with their high res EVF or some combination thereof..

It doesn’t matter. Leica has the technology developed anyway and it might cost more to disable it than to just leave it in. And video is a big thing for Leica.

Why is this? Does Dr. Kaufmann see himself as a potential movie director? He is quite proud of the Leica Cine line, and likely with justification.

Do Leica's cine lenses work on the SL? Just asking.

Indeed. If you are watching any Hollywood blockbuster, chances are the pictures you see were shot using CW Sonderoptic lenses, with asperical elements ground in Wetzlar (and as I heard today, ever since they have mastered the daunting task of grinding lenses for CW Sonderoptic, everything else now looks so much easier by comparison). Which isn’t to say that other Leica lenses were not suited for video. And when you have the lenses, why not go the whole way and build cameras that perform as well as much more expensive dedicated movie cameras?

Very interesting. So RED cameras must be very expensive.

It would be ironic if the savior of Leica Camera in the digital era, so to speak, was a video capability integrated into an ostensibly robust still camera  ;)  (typ 601). We see Canon cameras with monstrous zooms doing video work for TV and web streams around our lab all of the time... perhaps Leica is aiming at this niche.

I cannot help digressing to my favorite gear-- I once shot a brief video interview for a colleague with my M240 + APO 50. The video editor was later shocked by the "clean, pure quality" of the raw file I had turned over. The guy said it must be a great camera. I replied that the glass was actually even better.

Well that would be the:

4.0/28-50 MATE E49 of 340gm

2.8-4.0/28-90 Vario-Elmarit-R E67 of 740gm

compared with

2.8-3.8/24-90 Vario-Elmarit-SL E82 of 1140gm

But we are comparing apples with oranges.

I would not expect an AF IS 2.8-4.0/24-90 Zoom lens  to be much smaller or lighter.

Seriously, this is like a nightmare or some cruel prank. The M is way long in the tooth. It no doubt is stil more than capable- that's not in debate. It's just that, I mean wtf... They built a new factory, opened all these stores, and I'm still almost a year into waiting for a an MM 246. It's so long I don't give a crap anymore. I just want a new M. Not some bull crap auto focus fixed lens camera, not an interchangeable one either. That's a different deal altogether. I want the damn camera that has been evolving for 100 years- a mother effing M. I wouldn't give a damn if it was even in the same body. Just an improved sensor and the option to have an at least competitive EVF. The EVF improved and released alone would be a sign of respect. Bottom line- the rangefinder is a joy of photography. The M is made for people that love simplicity. This SL, Q, T- seriously get real. Make-a-new-M and allow me to not have to defend this elitist, half assed company any longer. Dude...
