I know this thread is mostly populated by M users (with of course some main users of other cameras infiltrating !!) and other Leica camera users but despite that I like this new system, and the idea of go with zooms initially seems a good idea compared to the competition. If the 50mm f1.4 is anything like the Summilux then that's a good thing as well, as the only good 50mm DSLR lenses the last time I looked were the Sigma and Otus

I wish Leica lots of luck with this.

At the moment my needs are met with the M, both film and digital, and some CSCs/compacts. But in the future if I want FF AF this will be top of my list to look at

Someone commented on another forum about the size of the 50 lux, which indicates it has been designed for a thick sensor cover. This doesn't bode well for M glass adaptation.

Well, in that case you could always ask Kolari to exchange the thick cover glass.

They probably would consider it if there are enough sales.

you can get an idea what improvements to expect.

Why would I want to do that? The idea was an EVF based camera as a back up to the M240, and cheaper (since there is no expensive RF). The SL costs more than the M240 so a used M240 would be a better back up.

Maybe true, but it sure is good with Zeiss FE WA designed lenses. Zeiss makes extremely good lenses too.

I agree Lou, I have some of those Zeiss lenses.

The problem is not with the A7r2 in general, it's only with the thick sensor cover glass, but that can be replaced.

Then it becomes a very suitable camera for M lenses.

In fact a modified A7 or A7II has been shown to eliminate the corner smearing that even the 50 Summilux-M ASPH exhibits on an M240 camera.

My personal opinion on this new Leica system, based on current news:

- both the camera and lenses are way too BIG!

- (so far) no real innovation compared to what the market is already offering at a lower price (ie. Sony A7RII);

- very expensive system.

I'm confident IQ will be as good (or even better) compared to what Sony offers, but still why should I buy a camera at that price if it does not offer something unique?? The M system even if it's very expensive, is a better choice in my opinion, since it offers something that other cameras in the market don't have: a light and small system with outstanding image quality!

If I'm looking for a backup system with AF lenses, I believe there are better and cheaper options (Sony A7 or even a small APS-C system like a Leica T or Fuji X-T1 camera). This is new system is expensive, huge, heavy and (so far) doesn't offer anything unique ...

Maybe a viable and practical option would be to use this new camera with the smaller 18-56 and 55-135 mm T-mount zoom lenses and than, when maximum quality is needed, use a fixed full-frame lens (m or sl mount).

Do you have a source for that? Not being contentious, just intrigued. Last month I looked into that mod option but found no comparisons that would inspire me to buy into a new camera system and then spend $500 more for a modification. Any word on whether the mod to a thinner sensor glass negatively affect native lenses?

Obliged.

Any pic or link about that? I understand that you cannot show any sharp corners out of Leica wides on your Sony body but perhaps you can show smeared corners out of the Summilux 50 asph on your M240 if you have one?

Thanks.  Sure, this is the reference I had in mind.

KOLARI THIN-STACK MOD ON A7II VS M240 — LEICA 50/1.4 SUMMILUX

It looks like their performance is neck to neck.  That's probably a better description.

To your second question.

Yes indeed, as one would expect, with the Kolari modification native FE lenses can suffer.

AFAIK only a few native lenses have been tested so far.

A good summary of all the tests one can find here:

Went through Jim's blog (link in your comment) and although 50lux is same in M240 and Kolari, the tiny 28 elmarit is vastly superior on M240 compari to Kolari. He says (for f/2.8)

"The Leica is substantially better. It’s not great, but the Kolari image is unusable if corner sharpness is necessary."

Kolari doesn't catchup till f/11

A thin sensor stack is not the only thing Leica is doing:
