I'm 100% positive the new M and the new system SL, or whatever it is called will be fabulous. They may have a flaw or two, but they will be fabulous. I'm also very sure of two more things - (1) they will have sod all to do with what 99.9999% of the world's paid photographers do for a living, and (2) Steve Huff will not get a global exclusive on either camera.

I agree 100%.

All Leica cameras have been fabulous... The M8 was the most problematic, but the reason was manufacturing and components quality. Leica learned how to handle this, and the M8.2 and M9 were much better. Anyway, I have to say this: when the M8 is "stable", and all problems are sorting out, the camera is nice, beautiful and the images (at low ISOs) are wonderful.

The S, T, and the M family is great... the S(007) and the Q are a hint on how far Leica can go today... those cameras are second to none.

The new system will show those high standards, sure. This is the right moment to do it.

The price will be high but this is the price of excellence!

(We Europeans should be proud of those German & Portuguese factories).

First rumor concerning price: a little bit more than €10,000 for the Leica SL + Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8-4 / 24-90mm Asph. combo.

New Leica SL kit to cost over 10.000 Euro!

You know I would have guessed it without the rumor. I think the SL will cost 7000€ and the zoom 3000€ judging from existing products.

Erm... having read the various threads in this forum where people complain about the various faults that the Leica (£3k+ and £5k+) cameras have and continue to suffer I can be forgiven for thinking that those parts of your sentences dont really apply to these products.

Perhaps the reason so many professionals no longer use Leica [emoji3]

I remember in some thread sometime ago MJH said the S was a professional camera and the M was not. He was, in sort of language mix, attaching professional to a camera built and used for studio work. So, I suspect the SL is new "professional" camera in that it is first a studio MF camera to "replace?" the S.

I do enjoy the fun people are having with the professional definition -- especially the call girl reference! :-)

Who knows ? But I'm rather sure that if it will be targeted mainly to professional marketplace it won't kill the S... S is a SLR, has a 30x45 CCD sensor, a set of lenses still to be completed, and seems it has gained a certain position in its market... wouldn't be fine, for this kind of audience, to announce a camera that sounds like a funeral for the previous one you adressed to the same audience: not a good way to regain a position over...

What is there new for the M? Improved sensor software etc. maybe a built in EVF. That's about it. It is a complete design. Took them a while to go from M3 to M240 but they did with lots of evolutionary steps, some a bit slower some too fast (M5). In the end except for improved sensor simply because technology gets better I am not sure what is new for the M.

ISO performance

Sensor performance

updated EVF either built in or attached doesn't matter to me.

Slimmer design

I agree. As I wrote, as technology improves, which it has and will, newer Ms will have better sensors and software, that means ISO DR etc. and EVF, again as technology improves. But I just don't see the camera changing other than what technology delivers just like a 3 Series BMW. Design? Smaller would be nice but there are some basic parameters of physics that keep the size what it is at least until sensor sits some place else and the image is transmitted there instead of to the back of the camera. Why not? That would be revolutionary

The current model sports a CMOS sensor supporting live-view and (4K and HD) movie recording, although the S-E (Typ 006) is still available for those preferring a CCD.

wouldn't be fine, for this kind of audience, to announce a camera that sounds like a funeral for the previous one you adressed to the same audience: not a good way to regain a position over...

In that case it should appear likely that the SL will address a different type of photographer than the S. Not all professionals are alike (and neither are amateurs).

Right... but just a matter of the TITLE OF THIS THREAD...  B) ... it started as a discussion about a future M...

And then it turned out that these speculations were premature and that rumours taken to be about a new M were probably about the new SL (Typ 601). There are no rumours of any substance about a new M.

I have accumulated a fair amount of Nikon gear over the years, mainly as I have grown and developed my photographic interests. This has included forays into sports, macro, landscape etc, etc. My M240 is my go to camera now as I have narrowed my photography more and more to landscape/travel. The sports/dinghy sailing photography is now reducing as my children are getting older and moving onto other things.

If/when the SL typ 601 is announced, and it becomes evident that it is a mirrorless/AF/full frame system; I would be interested in taking a serious look.

However, one thing still keeps me from getting rid of the Nikon and that is the "creative lighting system" with their flashguns.

(a family member is getting married next year and this would still be helpful for some of the event images)

Flash hasn't been a Leica strongpoint over the years. ;)

I'm not talking about static studio setups with pocket wizards so much, but portable TTL/automatic multiple strobe/flash capability.

Is there any indication that the new SL has this?

If that were possible, along with multiple wireless control of flash, then I might finally say goodbye to Nikon and move over to Leica by trading in the Nikon gear.
