Could I connect Leica M Lens to Canon 5D body?

Short answer: no

The register distance of the Canon is too large. That goes for all SLR cameras. Theoretically one could do macro with an M lens, but that would not make much sense.

If you want to use Leica lenses on your Canon, you need Leica R lenses on an adpter.

What is the present the Leica M lens or the camera?

Leica M lenses can fit to most 'mirrorless' interchangeable lens cameras, such as the Sony or Fuji models, with a suitable adaptor.

For a Canon 5D you can fit most Leica R lenses with an adaptor.

If you're buying a present for a photographer I'd suggest discussing with them first to see what they want/need. Cameras/lenses are very personal choices IMHO and you're spending a reasonable sum of money, so you don't want to buy something which they actually have little or no use for.

+1 About involving the one who get's the present. Certainly because working with an M lens on a adapter is not everyones cup of tea.

You will lose most automatic features like AF, P, Auto aperture, and the ability to focus with small apertures...

If you want to use an M lens, why not look into a nice second hand M8, M9 or higher if new Leica RF are over budget?

Still manual focus of course, but it would give much better user experience than any solution using an adapter.
