I am also experiencing 4 second wake up time. Very frustrating as I'm always missing shots. I am using a 32gb FujiFilm class10 SDHC card. middle of the road card for speed. I never delete in camera, i always lock the card before sticking it in my mac and formatted the card with SD Formatter initially then formatted in camera before first use. I then format in camera after a download that uses at least 60 percent of the card.

I never had this issue with my M9's with identical cards.

I hope this can be addressed with a firmware update. Somewhat ironic to keep missing the "decisive moment" with a Leica M  :)

Well, about the wake up time at start, I have never measured it, but by sense is "more 4 than 3" sec regardless of the SD card (or better to say, regardless the 3 I used on M240 - 2 16GB and one 8GB)   : personally, don't suffer it so much, but I admit that sounds a long time : if, apart new functions, they would work on optimization/robustness of the FW code, I think it can be made better.

I'm puzzled why wake-up time needs to have anything to do with the card. What stops a designer telling the camera to function entirely on internal memory on wale-up, and then use the SD card later, after it has been woken up?

 

I don't sure if the wake up time It depends on the SD card speed, but I think yes.

During boot or wake up is made a check-up and also the control of access to SD...the internal 2GB buffer is only for the shoots.

I believe however that this latency can be improved with a new firmware.

I'm puzzled why wake-up time needs to have anything to do with the card. What stops a designer telling the camera to function entirely on internal memory on wale-up, and then use the SD card later, after it has been woken up?

The fact that there simply is no internal flash memory for storing pictures. No card, no pictures.

Vital piece of information! Does this mean there is no firmware fix for this, or can the firmware be written differently so that it doesn't have to scan the whole card to find an empty spot for the upcoming photo every time it wakes up from sleep?

Simple empirical test:

- boot without SD: no latency, boot immediately 

- boot with SD: some seconds of latency (variable of SD storage, SD performance, ecc)

 

a new firmware CAN change the latency time. Off course.

You are right. I just tried your test and it is exactly as you predicted. Quite frankly its a bit puzzling why Leica would find this behavior acceptable almost three years after release. Unfortunately this is what happens when you have a monopoly, there is no incentive to better your product - given that there is no competition.

But I don't know what types of check is being done at startup...perhaps even a fundamental control on the SD to prevent data loss...(just a hypothetic idea)

If so: then it's better latency time with data safety than fast boot without control. But I have not info about this.

Still, it does. I had Lexar 16 GB Pro 600x and it was rather fast  @1.4 sec. I just got a new card, Lexar Pro 16 GB 1000x, and it was noticeably faster. After running it through SD formatter it must come close to the 1sec Leica claims.

Delay? 3 or 4 seconds? I haven't noticed a delay but I am receiving a state pension. Maybe that explains it? Or maybe it is because my camera is already switched on because I forgot to switch it off? Help!

is your camera set to never sleep? and if so how is your battery life? just curious. I have been afraid to leave my camera in a constant "on" state because of battery drain.

The camera does not have to scan the card in order to write new data.

 

MJH, perhaps you can explain the difference between the buffer and the SD card
