M240 FW

I would like to share some feedback from my circle.

Some M240 owners in China reported that after updating the newest FW, the red/blue dots/lines for focus peaking in LV mode have become too small and thin to observe. I have not updated the new FW and hence have no idea about it.

Could anyone here confirm wether that is true or not? Thank you.

Untrue. It works exactly the same.

Did you save your settings as a profile before the reset occured? Just curious as i have never got a reset since 2013 but i always use profiles.

Yes, I use profiles, and I store them on my computer, so I can reload them if the reset happens.

The "Reset bug" has happened both with and without profiles.

Best regards

Trond

Are you sure you're not doing a reset instead of format? :)

I can't rule it out. The menu options are next to each other and I do usually format the card every morning. That might be the most likely explanation. Thanks!

The focus peaking lines imo have always been thin... all in all, after 1,5 year with M240, I have found that FP is a feature of no so frequent REAL usefulness : with "normal" focals, RF is usually better, with strong WAs and EVF, focusing isn't critical, with long focals, many times the FP lines do not appear , and if they do, in handheld action is simpler and quickier to make 2-3 shots bracketing the focus : anyway, I feel no difference with the new FW installed.

[...] Blame Leica's horrible implementation.

Your constant Leica bashing is becoming boring CheshireCat. Focus peaking is not more "horrible" on my Leica's than my Fuji or Ricoh EVFs. All are more or less useless for me so I much prefer image magnification.

And he is wrong too. The implementation on the M is excellent.

Focus peaking gets more accurate as it gets more subtle. However, for short to medium focal lengths it needs to be more pronounced.

On the M medium focal lengths are catered for by the rangefinder, so the peaking can be geared to  accurate for long focals and macro. The downside is that it is very difficult to see on shorter focal lengths.

Peaking on cameras like the Sonies is intended for the most used medium focal lengths, so more obvious.

One of my nightmares was trying to video a herd of Zebra on the Nex7 with a 135. Even on the lowest setting the whole viewfinder flared into a red-out. And it even peaks on image noise at high ISO.

Having shot a few Safaris on the M240 I can only praise Leica's implementation, for the use intended. Accurate to the cm on lenses between 135 and 560. But I must admit it takes some training. they are so accurate that it is all too easy to slip past them unnoticed when focusing.

It might have been wise for Leica to offer a few levels in Menu, for different use(rs)

Glad it works for you (or your couple lenses), jaapv, but it clearly does not work for many of use.

People who praise Leica's implementation, or who don't think "FP is useful" should know better [implementations].

Had the same happening to me today. It was a complete reset -- all user profiles were gone and the camera was set to the factory defaults. No live view involved. I noticed it when taking the first shots after swapping in a full battery.

Also: I have experienced a couple of the usual freezes since updating the firmware. No EVF or Live View.

Loosing the complete User Settings I had last week (while traveling), still on the older, prior version. Luckily I recoginzed it directly and also had a save of the settings/profiles on the card, so only needed read them again.

This is not what I wanted to hear, shi$  :-(

Thanx for your info!

Ciao Axel

Format is hard to miss if you go at it backwards - menu, up, up, right, right, info.

I find the M240 implementation of focus peaking to be superb on all but wide angle lenses. I've recently been using a Nikkor 55mm AIS macro for copy work and a 90mm Summarit for portraits and in both cases the focus peaking delivered outstanding results. Wouldn't be without it!

Yes. But if you accidentally do three ups instead of two, you will reset the camera.
