I tried to do some experiments with the new firmware and the GPS today to see if anything had changed. Yes, I know nothing was mentioned in the announcement, but I figured the list of changes was mangled by marketing (which is why I think those who aren't updating because there is nothing for them are mad; how do you know?).

Anyold how, I went into the garden switched the camera on, waited 4 minutes until it had found the satellites then went back in the house. The info display showed an exclamation mark on the satellite icon; I assumed it had lost contact. The plan was to see how long after losing contact it discarded your last known location. But do you know what? The damn thing reconnected with the satellites while in the house. I've never seen it do that before. I switched the camera off, waited ten minutes and switched it back on. It reestablished its location. I'm astonished; it had previously been the most insensitive GPS I had owned. Perhaps it's the firmware or perhaps it's the weather.

I still don't know how long it takes after losing signal before it sets your location to "nowhere" as I can't get it to lose contact.

For paranoid users, GPS is easily switched off in settings. Just go to the setting that says, "someone's watching me" and turn to "send me to a shrink."

The people in white coats will then have to go back to base with their straitjacket and leave you alone ... unless you take a step outside the front door.

That means we are everywhere and can watch you even indoors now. You can no longer hide.

That is not how GPS works, it's a passive system. It is simply receiving signals from multiple satellites. And calculating position based on doppler effect and relativity.

No kidding. I'd have never imagined that.

I tried that and when to Nowhere. It works fine there, that is Nowhere, NV, USA. Google it to see that it IS a place somewhere.

3.  Once today without any apparent cause, and unrelated to any aforementioned glitch, the camera reset itself to the default settings.  I realized it when I reviewed a shot and saw that it was a .jpg, as I normally shoot .dng only.  ISO was reset to auto, EV was reset to 0, lens detection was reset to automatic and direct EV adjustment (with the thumbwheel only) was reset to off.

Had the same happening to me today. It was a complete reset -- all user profiles were gone and the camera was set to the factory defaults. No live view involved. I noticed it when taking the first shots after swapping in a full battery.

Also: I have experienced a couple of the usual freezes since updating the firmware. No EVF or Live View.

The "reset to default" bug was present in my M 240 and M-P 240 before the last FW update.

This bug is also present in my Mono M 246.

It happens rarely, but non the less very frustrating when it happens in the middle of a series of photos, and you do not notice in the heat of the action.

Best regards

Trond

Thank you. I have had the reset to default three times in 18 months. I thought I was having an issue with the internal battery. After your post I now realise that it is a bug. If only Leica would set DNG, or even DNG+Jpeg as the default. It would save a lot of issues.

Did you save your settings as a profile before the reset occured? Just curious as i have never got a reset since 2013 but i always use profiles.

For me I have had the 'reset to default' with a profile set once, and both other times without a profile set.

yes- because as we all know: if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear...

I would like to share some feedback from my circle.

Some M240 owners in China reported that after updating the newest FW, the red/blue dots/lines for focus peaking in LV mode have become too small and thin to observe. I have not updated the new FW and hence have no idea about it.

Could anyone here confirm wether that is true or not? Thank you.

I use profiles. I had exported and then re-imported them when installing the firmware update, so I have not had a need to save a profile in a while. I turned the camera on in the morning, checked the battery which was at 30% and swapped in a full one. Half an hour later when taking the first shot I noticed that the frame lines had turned back to their default white appearance, which alerted me to the reset.

DNG + JPEG would be the best factory default as it would satisfy the needs of those who want JPEG and those who want DNG files, in other words, everybody. I'd love to hear the argument for defaulting to JPEG only as it would give us a glimpse of a fantastical universe with magical possibilities perhaps including creatures more mysterious than dragons or unicorns.
