M240 FW

Finally 2.0.2.5 is there

Improvements:

  • New Menu item “Flash exposure compensation” to adjust flash exposure with the Leica SF 26 flash unit (only active when SF 26 is attached). This new function requires Firmware 1.1 on the SF 26 Flash.
  • Several firmware bugs that caused occasional camera hang up when using Live View or Video function have been fixed.

Interestingly I never had hang ups while using live view, only when using high isos...

As I never have or will use movie mode or an SF26, and rarely if ever use live view (and have never experienced a lockup when I did, only the infuriating time-lag between shots when live view goes dead)  I'll sit this one out at least for a while until the early adopters give the all-clear on any potential newly-introduced bugs.

Indeed infuriating. I have said it before. Set the preview to "shutter hold", do hold the shutter after exposure and the image will freeze instead of go black, and revert as soon as the file is written. Infinitely better, albeit obviously not as good as instant return.

Installs unproblematically (as usual).  I only have one body with me at the moment, so can't compare, but I have the impression that shutter lag is less in LV with this FW.  Imagination?  I'll be interested to compare both LV and EVF performance before I upgrade the FW on body 2.  Any thoughts on this?

re those who complain about start up time, I can only say get SD Formatter (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/) and apply this to the cards you use.  I use a range of 16GB Sandisk cards and have no problems with startup time.  Fully comparable with my Canon 5 series DSLRs...

Lucky you Chris. Night and day for me. About 2 seconds with the fastest cards on the M240 and less than 0.5 second with any card on the 5D1.

The new firmware documentation says it allows flash exposure compensation with SF26 only if the SF26 is with firmware 1.1 or higher.  The SF26 document tells you how to check the FW version.  Mine appears to be 1.0.  However, with the flash on the camera menu shows flash exposure comp, and when I tested it, it was working.  If you have a SF26 don't be rushing off to upgrade the FW before you test it out.

I don't find a frozen view of the last shot any less infuriating than a blackout.  Either way it imposes identical constraints.

You forget how good the optical rangefinder is, or how briefly the mirror blinks up and down, till you have to deal with the infuriating blackout of an EVF. For anything where timing is an issue, the blackout is a huge fail. As much as I liked the T, it's the ultimate reason I sold mine.

Yes- but it does not affect your pupil response, which is tiring.

No- but it is the best workaround. I think  that a EVF is a lot better than a Visoflex, which has a blackout before the shutter release. Especially with long heavy lenses that used to cause camera droop. Progress!!! :D :D

Welcome to the forum. :) SET / User Profile / Manage Profiles / Export Profiles to Card.

When it is done, use another card for the FW update or copy the file "Profiles.M" from your card to your PC.

I can also report...that testing of the SF 26 was difficult...I'm still not sure what version of firmware I have.  I can assume I have 1.0 since I bought the flash last year.  However, I can change the flash exposure on my M240 through the menu system with the recent update of firmware for my M240.  I took a few test photos and altered the flash exposure setting and achieved different result.  This makes me assume I needn't send it back to Leica for a firmware update.
