pop Posted May 12, 2015 Share #21 Posted May 12, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) simply they can mention that existing users have to pay for the upgrade, THAT's IT! You don't have to pay for an upgrade. You have bought one version of the software and you can keep on using that version as long as you please. That version of the software will forever be able to process the files made by your camera. It's only if you want the functions provided by a more recent version that you need to upgrade your software, and this is the same with every kind of product I can think of. edwardkaraa Posted May 12, 2015 Share #22 Posted May 12, 2015 So combining Edward's and Andy's replies there seems to be a cut-off Date. Edward, Did you buy before January? I hope that I have the luck and will also get LR6 as I didn't download yet. (but only because I didn't have time , hopefully lucky me ) I bought it in February 2014 but never downloaded the software until now. I got LR5. MaDeVa Posted May 12, 2015 Share #23 Posted May 12, 2015 That version of the software will forever be able to process the files made by your camera. this is not completely thru. it is thru provided that you don't change your MAC/PC or/and OS. In fact sometimes soon LR5.7 will not work anymore on a new Windows or OSX version , but this is nothing to do with Leica, this is the normal evolution of the HW and SW. This exact problem happen with my scanner Plustek, the Silverfast provided with the scanner worked fine for few year, then it wasn't supported anymore by OS X Lion and I was forced to buy a new scanner sw. I purchased Vuescan, and recently my Vuescan 9.3 was not working anymore on Yosimite: likely I have purcheased a license with lifetime upgrade, so I got the 9.5.09 and worked fine. pop Posted May 12, 2015 Share #25 Posted May 12, 2015 this is not completely thru. it is thru provided that you don't change your MAC/PC or/and OS. You're certainly right in that. However, Leica is not responsible for Microsoft or Apple breaking your application software.

keithlaban.co.uk Posted May 12, 2015 Share #27 Posted May 12, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Gosh, what a can of worms! I wonder, if I leave downloading the complimentary copy of Lightroom long enough - after all it's already been more than 18 months - perhaps Adobe will no longer have a LR5 download and will have to give me LR6? jaapv Posted May 12, 2015 Share #28 Posted May 12, 2015 simply they can mention that existing users have to pay for the upgrade, THAT's IT!Yes - Upgrades usually have to be paid for, regardless of how you got by the software.
leicahg Posted May 12, 2015 Author Share #29 Posted May 12, 2015 Yes - Upgrades usually have to be paid for, regardless of how you got by the software. so let them say so instead of leaving existing users in a Grey Area, without knowing it! This is the main issue I am tackling: efficient communication with existing Leica owners before attracting new ones with Strong Selling Line "You get LR6 with your new purchase"!!!!! CheshireCat Posted May 12, 2015 Share #30 Posted May 12, 2015 perhaps Adobe will no longer have a LR5 download and will have to give me LR6? The only thing that matters is your Lightroom serial number. If you install LR6, it will not work with a LR5 serial number.
leicahg Posted May 12, 2015 Author Share #31 Posted May 12, 2015 The only thing that matters is your Lightroom serial number. If you install LR6, it will not work with a LR5 serial number. but when upgrading from LR5 to 6, then you are still using the same LR5 s/n to upgrade towards LR6, without getting any new s/n!!! edwardkaraa Posted May 12, 2015 Share #32 Posted May 12, 2015 have you registered your camera s/n/date of purchase before the LR6 release? Yes I registered the camera last year.
MaDeVa Posted May 12, 2015 Share #33 Posted May 12, 2015 Yes I registered the camera last year.So this proves that my theory is correct, as Leica will give an Lr6 license for new purchase, and yours was made (as per registration) before the announcement.Even not used before, the TAN belongs to the purchase registered before the announcement therefore you are allowed to download LR5 and not LR6. 250swb Posted May 12, 2015 Share #34 Posted May 12, 2015 so let them say so instead of leaving existing users in a Grey Area, without knowing it! Seems black and white not grey, you pay if you want to upgrade to a newer version of your software, you are the owner of it, not Leica. Leica is only adding a license to placate newbie photographers who haven't paid for their own version of Lightroom already. So I can see where the confusion could arise if somebody had never bought or used image processing software before. Learning to use Lightroom effectively requires a learning curve and when you are far enough along that curve you will know if you need to upgrade to each new version, many photographers skip alternate versions before they upgrade. jaapv Posted May 12, 2015 Share #35 Posted May 12, 2015 I cannot find the general principle of having to pay for new versions of software -any software, with the exception of lifelong licenses- a really grey area.

I cannot find the general principle of having to pay for new versions of software -any software, with the exception of lifelong licenses- a really grey area. Then Is it the responsibility of the software developer (Adobe) or software provider (Leica) to clarify this grey area?
LeicaFFM Posted May 12, 2015 Share #37 Posted May 12, 2015 Interestingly, different users seem to have different experiences wit downloading LR. When I first purchased my new M in March 2015, I registered it and downloaded one copy of LR5. Yesterday I decided to download a second copy with the same TAN for my laptop and I received a new LR registration number for LR6. I now have two copies (one license) of LR6. pop Posted May 12, 2015 Share #38 Posted May 12, 2015 Then Is it the responsibility of the software developer (Adobe) or software provider (Leica) to clarify this grey area? Again: what is grey there? They said you get LR6, and lo, you get LR6. They did not say you get a perennial string of software products, just this one. If you were to buy LR in a shop, you'd get one version, too, and if you felt you needed another version, you had either to buy a new one or upgrade from the old one to the new one. This is the prevailing standard in the software industry. It's the same in the entertainment industry. You buy a movie. If you like the sequel, you buy that as well. Or a book. Or a music album. LeicaFFM Posted May 12, 2015 Share #40 Posted May 12, 2015 Interesting.... Maybe Mach 2015 is considered by Adobe within a timeframe who deserves a free upgrade? I was surprised myself. I didn't expect to receive LR6. But even after entering the TAN from Leica, I received a new email with a different registration number for Adobe LR. Very strange, but I am not complaining.
