Does your M grab people's attention?

A funny thing that I have experienced many times is that, if I cover the red dot and the lettering on the front of the camera, it does attract less attention, and vice versa.

Quite a lot of the attention that the red dot attracts, I think, is from those who seem to vaguely know that the red dot logo is for a very expensive/high-end camera brand. This seems to tickle their curiosity more than anything else, which is why whenever the red dot is masked it tends to draw less attention, as ppl automatically assume that it is just a camera.

Mind you, they still see it easily. They just don't wonder how much it costs.

So I generally don't believe that covering them up with black tape makes one less visible as a photographer.

A couple of times a year I get asked about an M. Mostly people think it's an old film camera and think it's quaint. Occasionally someone knows what an M is and takes notice. If you want to attract attention, I suggest a Rolleiflex. Every time I take it out people comment on it. For that camera it's almost a plus as a conversation starter.

I do wonder if people's rate of getting asked about their camera is tied to people's reaction to you and how approachable/friendly you seem?

maybe it's not the camera but the owner/photographer that grabs the attention?:ph34r:

i think this is true. I have had only three people comment on my camera in three years but I wander around with an unhappy glare. I've been told it's why people avoid me.

Walking in the Streets of Chester the other day, some guy stopped me and said" Ah a Leica, I'm impressed you know how to use it", can I have a look at the back please" I explained it was digital, an M240, but stopped short of saying I was a 'learner driver'. He introduced himself as a professional photographer, from a studio with a shop front just down the road where we were standing.

When I was with my wife's family at a function they all looked at my M-P 240 and said that was the camera they wanted used rather than their iPhones. That doesn't amount to much, but nobody had any idea what I was using because it is discreet. I like discreet. That's why I sold my M 240 and replaced it with the M-P 240. Not having the badge is a bonus. Anyway, they all loved the shots I took ... which is a real bonus because after 50 years of photography I still struggle.

I applaud your humility and try to emulate it.
