seekwul Posted April 13, 2015 Share #1  Posted April 13, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi  I've done some searching (both in the forum and online in general) and still can't seem to figure out how to make this all work cohesively. I'm hoping someone can give me some simple instructions - I'm sure I'm just overlooking something.  A few months ago, I bought the M Macro Adapter, thinking it would enable macro photography on all of my lenses. I honestly can't tell if it does - it's not at all like the macro experience I'm used to with my Nikon gear (where I can get a fly ball to fill up an entire frame). I play around with it every now and then and can get visibly closer than I can with anything else... but it's not very macro.  So I was traveling recently and got an amazing deal on the collapsible Elmar 90 Macro kit - add in the tax refund and I felt morally obligated to buy it (that's the GAS speaking). It comes with the lens, the goggles, and a variable finder. Nice.  So... to shoot macro - what pieces arm I supposed to be using ?  Any basic guidance anyone could provide will be super appreciated !  Thanks

jdlaing Posted April 13, 2015 Share #2  Posted April 13, 2015 The 90mm Macro Lens mounted to the Macro Adapter mounted to the body.Note that the lens mounts "upside down" to the adapter or opposite the mounting position when used all alone on the body. The Macro setup will produce 1:2 ratio which is not a true 1:1 Macro but with modern digital use and cropping this is inconsequential.I like the one I have which is the last one out before the latest version. It works beautifully for me and is a fine lens by itself or with the Macro Adapter. Mine came with the Angle Viewer which I have not tried yet.  Welcome, dear visitor! seekwul Posted April 13, 2015 Author Share #4  Posted April 13, 2015 Thanks JDLIANG - so the goggles are only for focusing ? Not sure why the 90 Elmar macro kit didn't come with the macro adapter piece - that was the piece I had bought separately.
jaapv Posted April 13, 2015 Share #5  Posted April 13, 2015 For real macro you will still have to use  a Bellows plus 90 or 135 mm lens head from older lenses and use the EVF. (or Visoflex + Bellows on the M8/9) Make sure you get a R bellows on R adapter because it is very complicated to remove the M bellows as one cannot reach the release button without dismantling the bellows. The 90 Macro is a very handy and high quality travelling kit.

Not sure why the 90 Elmar macro kit didn't come with the macro adapter piece - that was the piece I had bought separately. Â Yes. The goggled adapter is for close focusing only. The specs say down to 20" but mine seems to focus closer. Hand held takes a little practice and a tripod works better on macros. If you have the version with the goggles that is the macro adapter. seekwul Posted April 13, 2015 Author Share #9  Posted April 13, 2015 I guess I'm confused as to why the "Leica 90mm F/4 Macro Kit (6-Bit, Black)" doesn't actually come with a macro adapter. What makes it macro then ?
jdlaing Posted April 13, 2015 Share #10 Â Posted April 13, 2015 I guess I'm confused as to why the "Leica 90mm F/4 Macro Kit (6-Bit, Black)" doesn't actually come with a macro adapter. What makes it macro then ? Â It does. The goggles are attached to the Macro Adapter. You put that part on the camera first and then attach the lens to it. It then becomes a macro setup. luigi bertolotti Posted April 13, 2015 Share #11  Posted April 13, 2015 Hi  .... So... to shoot macro - what pieces arm I supposed to be using ?  Any basic guidance anyone could provide will be super appreciated !  Thanks    If you have a M240 and EVF you have lot of possibilities... bellows (with the warning pointed by Jaap) is the best.... another possibility is the current Novoflex LEM/VIS device which is a set of extension rings on which you can mount any M lens... with a good Summicron 50 you have significant range of macro usage (almost to 1:1... see https://www.novoflex.com/en/products/adapters/extension-tube-set-leica-m/ ) : well made, not too costly, very portable.
thighslapper Posted April 13, 2015 Share #12  Posted April 13, 2015 The old 90/4 macro came with the adapter with goggles so you can use the RF focussing with any Leica camera ....... but you can only use the 90/4 on the adapter with RF focussing  The new 90/4 and macro adapter can only be used on the M with live-view  On the M with live-view both old and new adapters can be used with most Leica lenses as it just acts as a spacer (the old OUFRO does the same) and enable you to focus closer.....  Neither is going to get you TRUE macro ...... just a bit closer.  You can always stack OUFRO's (and there is a new replacement on amazon somewhere) and get closer ...... or use bellows  ..... or you can use a screw-on macro lens like a Marumi (get the +5)  which will get you in close as well.  There is no real macro lens in the Leica stable ..... but endless gadgets that will get you there with a bit of logical thought.  Best macro set-up of the lot for quality and convenience is actually the X-Vario with a +5 Marumi ......
