Herr Barnack Posted April 20, 2015 Share #101 Posted April 20, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Maybe the right moment to quote the Forum Mission Statement: No-one in the Leica forum should ever have to justify their purchase of a Leica product or their enjoyment of it. That's a good policy. Strangely enough, it is also my personal policy although I don't recall ever having read it in the mission statement. I try to avoid discussions about how much my camera or lens costs. What's the point?? People who ask that question won't understand, so why answer it to begin with? Another policy is if I can afford a Leica lens or camera without selling a kidney, draining the savings account or borrowing money - I will buy it. Mrs. Danger is in full agreement with this policy. I wanted an M-P; the Safari set caught my eye. I figured out a way to pay for it, so I bought it. I'm extremely pleased with "Higgins," as I have named my M-P Safari. Why "Higgins," you ask? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0PNqlheYCQ

wlaidlaw Posted April 21, 2015 Share #103 Posted April 21, 2015 I have posted this before but its warning is worth posting again. I bought a lithium rechargeable battery kit for my son's Canon digital, which originally used 2CR5 lithium cells. After a few charges which seemed to work OK, the battery was sitting in the camera on a table when it started to pour smoke out of the battery compartment and then flames. I squirted a CO2 fire extinguisher over it and when it cooled down, dug the totally melted battery out of the compartment, which fortunately was all metal. Amazingly the camera still worked. If that had been an M with its plastic battery compartment, the camera would have been destroyed and if it was a third party battery, there would be little come back. I have bought third party batteries from Amazon for P&S cameras, as at least Amazon will step up if the battery destroys a camera. I would never risk a non-Leica battery with an M. "Higgins" might be a well chosen name for a green zorki as a leica copy, but an original Leica Safari shuold better be called "Montgomery" http://tomtiger.home.xs4all.nl/fakes.html

duckrider Posted April 23, 2015 Share #109 Posted April 23, 2015 One of the very few complete R3 Safari sets still in existence, I see. Body, green Summicron 50, green 135 and - rare - the green canvas Kombitasche that came with the set Hello Jaap, apologise, but tele is a 180mm Elmar, not 135 Elmarit... My very & absolute first Leica was a Safari R3 & Summicron, reasonable price 'cause little damage on prism top, C969 was her name. Jee, I forgot soooo much in the past decades, but not her name! At that time I was pupil, owning a Canon AE-1, walking with schoolcompanions through the next greater city, Trier (eldest city from roman times) here in Germany.. Must have been 17yrs, perhaps 16. I saw her and fell in love! I had to have her! Imagine: I was pupil and my parents no millionairs, not even paying me extra money. I did holiday jobs most of the time. And she became mine! Dreaming 'bout a 28 or 180 Safari? No, not imaginable for years! But I was infected, Leica virus got me! In the next years as student I did more odd hand jobs in industry than visiting campus, caused by photrografic virus. But those jobs gave me expert knowledge I still get profit 'till today. Today: For 2 1/2 decades I do an expert job, which gives me achievability to reach for Leica equiment I did dream decades ago.... ....caused by a Safari.... Alan Aurmont Posted July 26, 2015 Share #110 Posted July 26, 2015 Here are some photos of the camera for those who enjoy camera porn!! I'm drooling. Joshua Lowe Posted July 27, 2015 Share #111 Posted July 27, 2015 Just got an email from B&H. They have the Safari kit w/ silver 35 cron on special for $8,791. That's an insane deal.
IkarusJohn Posted July 28, 2015 Share #112 Posted July 28, 2015 Also suggests there's something around the corner that may just make the M(240) based cameras ... historic. Is that fair? or am I being too negative. Good time to ignore this forum and go out, take pictures and enjoy your gear for what it does, rather than for what it isn't. Otherwise the green-eyed monster may make an attack on your wallet!

Adam Posted July 28, 2015 Share #116 Posted July 28, 2015 Hello everyone, I am new to the forum. I actually purchased a new safari for the reduced price a week ago. They just introduced the 12% rebate on new ones, so it is a good deal. I know there is probably a new M coming out, but I saw the Safari in the NYC Leica store and loved it. Plus I wanted to start with a summicron 35mm so it was an ideal choice. I am sure the new M will have lots of new stuff, but I feel I will keep this one for many years - I hope Lecia supports it for a while. I have been taking it out for a few days, it is a great camera! I like that it is built like a tank. And I love the lack of autofocus and the need to think before taking a picture. I used a rangefinder as a kid and teenager but then moved on to DSLR's. The usual story. I need to practice, but focusing does not seem that difficult. The bad thing is, I cannot blame bad shots on equipment anymore... Alan Aurmont Posted July 28, 2015 Share #117 Posted July 28, 2015 Guys, do you think Safari will hold a much better resale value than the regular M-P? Or will they sell for pretty much the same price? Also, what are the chances of Leica selling the new "M11" model + lens combo for around $8000 on launch? Thanks
Manoleica Posted July 28, 2015 Share #118 Posted July 28, 2015 I think it's too early to tell on the resale front.. Leica said that they retailed 1600.. but my feeling is that there are more around the world.. A great camera with the 35mm Cron ASPH.. I don't intend ever selling mine..
Adam Posted July 28, 2015 Share #119 Posted July 28, 2015 I think Leica claims that there were only 1500 made. Regardless, I do not plan of re-selling mine either. Since I just bought my camera, I am curious and somewhat apprehensive what the M11 will be. However, from my research, I doubt that there will be an M11 $8000 combo any time soon after the announcement. I also doubt that Leica will have a new M11 safari coming out soon. For me the green is much nicer, the coating seems to absorb finger marks. The only downside is people will notice it more than a black camera. But truth is I feel people stare more at the D-lux 7 than at the M. I overcame my hesitation to purchase late in the cycle by thinking what I would want in my Safari that I don't have: - better ISO would always be nice, - a built in magnifier/diopter adjustemnt would also be nice. - More pixels? Not sure what for. None was a game changer, so I purchsed the M10 version. It is a great camera combo. The lens are incredible. You want to go out and shoot.
