When Zeiss has to match or better Leica lenses there is considerable bloat. See the OTUS.

Not a fair comparison. The Otus lenses are for DSLR, and they have a much higher degree of correction than Leica's "equivalents" (both R and M lenses).

A fair comparison is the ZM 35/1.4 to the Leica 35 FLE.

A fair comparison is the ZM 35/1.4 to the Leica 35 FLE.

Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 Distagon ZM 63.2mm x 65.3mm 381g filter size 49mm

Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH(FLE) 56mm x 46mm 320g Filter size 46mm

With this size of lens, I'd have thought it was a significant size difference. So it's bigger and heavier than the Summilux 50 ASPH and only slightly smaller and lighter than the APO-Summicron 75 ASPH ...

I'm afraid I can't help with the if, or the when, but I can help with some images.

Here is one from Les Arcs last week taken with the 28 'lux
