Unlucky or poor quality control

I know.. I'm just looking back at my work from a couple of years ago of shots with the 35 and never did I think then there was a problem - but going in close it may well be that they are not pin sharp - but this was with the M9.. so I think I need to quit with the worrying.

Just two comments if you don't mind. First there are indeed QC problems at Wetzlar. The last lens i did the mistake to send them has taken almost one year and three trips to Germany to be calibrated as expected. Secondly, refrain from using rulers to check focus accuracy if you don't want to become paranoid ;). Remember it is just a rangefinder so check focus accuracy on 3D subjects at short, medium and long distance, it will be enough for you if you're an experienced photographer.

So I just did even more tests.. at the risk of getting boring - here's a side by side of the 35mm with using the RF and EVF but which do you think is which? Do you think either is worse or about the same?

The focus target was the large zero

I've taken all the saturation out to remove any CA that may be happening..

I think they both look about right.

At the risk of being flogged and salted here I'm going to suggest if you see a marked difference between the two a trip to the eye doctor may be on the agenda.

I don't see a marked difference- I've uploaded another version but the EVF shot is on the left. To me it's pretty obvious but I am aware the EVF is hyper accurate and I can see the focus changing when i use the ruler thing and peaking.. I can pinpoint where the absolute strongest focus is.

Of course it may not translate into real world shooting at all - but I am trying to establish if I'm expecting too much or I should be sending it alll back.. (My M and 6 lenses) to get aligned or not.

I've just added this pic - the EVF focussed shot is on the left.

It's the question of whether you would send the lens/camera back to get them adjusted if you were getting this result.

Based on those results I wouldn't but if it makes you feel better go ahead.

One solution: Spend your Sunday shooting private shots.

Yes. Of course I will- but now I am aware of a potential issue in 'test conditions' its hard to forget this. and not look for it.

The fact is of course that it could have been like this the whole time I've owned that lens but never been worked up enough to test it like this.

There must be someone at the store who can use the camera & lenses for a few days... If theres a problem they can verify... If it's you, then either sell or use and get on with life..

What's there to verify? It's pretty obvious - and why would a person in the store shooting pics for days on end be any more beneficial than me shooting stuff for the weekend. Not sure of your point there old chap.

Sounds like you are somewhat obsessed" old chap..

If the camera is "bad" get it changed..Get Leica Corp to send you a camera direct.

If the lenses need attention - get it done..

If the whole kit needs alignment - send it all off and get it done...

I feel your pain.. But do not denigrate peoples ideas for your betterment....Sir..

I sold a 24-70 Canon L lens once because I got completely paranoid with it, after getting it spot on focus all trough the zoom range.

If you really have lost confidence, just sell off all Leica stuff and move on.

The gear is worth nothing to you if you can't work comfortably with it.

Good luck!

I wasn't denigrating your idea- I was just asking what a Leica store would find that I haven't - or what they won't find. I think my test is pretty conclusive so now it's just a case of asking the good folk on this forum if it's actually an issue or a perceived problem by my paranoia.

I don't think we are the right people to do so - the only one who can restore your confidence is you.

You have fallen off your bicycle. Get on it again and carry on.

I once saw a photographer proclaiming on his site: "I take amazing images" As it happened it was no empty boast. Now toddle off and do so as well...:D

All this good folk can say is focus accuracy should be tested not only a short distance but at medium and long distance as well and your beloved rulers are of no use for that. Just test your lens in real-life situation i.e. on 3D subject matters at 0.7m, 5 to 10m and infinity. If your results are sharp you have nothing to do. Failing which, your lens and/or body (probably the lens in your case) need some calibration that's all.

Ok.. so I went out shooting with the 35. I know the 50 is off.

It's 100% back focussing. I won't upload a load of files with people - 3D objects it's off.

I just went shooting.

Now on my return I looked again at my 90mm and it's completely out.. this was at f2 and 4m away from my target. The RF shots are no way in focus. Not even close. The only way to nail it is with the EVF.

So.. I know you'll hate this but I went back inside to the ruler.

I was 1m from the target (large zero) set the camera on a tripod. Same shutter speed for all the shots. One shot on RF one on EVF. I was shooting f2 on all the lenses apart from the 28mm which was at 2.8 and the 21mm which was 3.4.

I actually think the camera is off because ALL the shots seem to be back focussing.. BUT the camera is new. Brand new out of the box.

So I created a link with the test results all together and I'd like your opinions. To me - as much as I love Leica - something is very wrong here.

Take a look:
