Currently looking for an m mount lens with a budget! Preferably 35mm focal length

Zeiss 35 f/2 - $800 used

M-Rokkor 40mm f/2 - $500 used

Leica 40mm f/2 - $800 used

voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 - $500 used

Voigtlander 35mm f/2.5 - $400 new

As you can see they're all under $1000, which is my budget. Which would be the best bang for the buck? My body is a Leica M4.

Cheers!

Have you considered a Leica Summicron or Summaron circa M4 vintage? I have an M3 and contemporary 50mm Summicron lens which is still an excellent performer even finding supporters in the digital age. :)

Not sure I'd recommend the Summaron as the one and only unless you're using a Monochrom or just B&W film.

The CV 1,7/35 is due to be re-released in M mount sometime in March; the LTM version was much acclaimed. The CV 1,4/35 has spherical aberrations galore and focus shift to fend with. Learning curve there but it's one of the random M lenses that works with the Sony a7. Go figure.

Don't think the Skopar can be beat for size, performance AND budget.

But....don't forget the contrasty Zeiss 2,8/35. Quite a tiny wonder if you don't need the heft and extra stop of the f/2 Biogon.

I know very well the issues with the 40mm. I thought that if I bought one, I would just file down cam.

So there has been two votes for the CV skopar so far! It sounds like a very tempting lens. The only problem is that it's not as fast as the others. Hmmmmm. Decisions decisions!

In a month (or so) there is a Voigtlaander 35mm f/1.5 due out on the same build as the new Nokton 50mm f/1.5

It may be worth the wait. I promises to,be a very nice item.

Thats interesting too, but I will be going on a few trips soon and would like something to use on my Leica.

I might just get the CV skopar. But I'll test out the zeiss f/2 too.

I couldnt find the zeiss f/2.8 used in my area. so thats out sadly :/

Why not a Leica lens on a Leica camera M4 ?

You can find second hand Summicron within 1000 E

or Summarit 35 at 890E ?

Another vote for the 35mm 2.5 Skopar pancake lens.

It is a really wonderfully perfect lens. Wonderfully small. Wonderfully Discrete. Wonderfully sharp. Wonderfully minimal distortion. Wonderful out of focus bits. Wonderful rendering.

The only reason not to get the skopar is because you can not live with a slower lens. All other lenses are compromises the beautiful rendering and resolution of the image. If you need speed because you occasionally shoot indoors or under street lamps, I would use the Zeiss F/2.

If you are almost always shooting indoors. Shoot with the 35mm f/1.4 voigtlander. I personally found the aberrations difficult to manage with this lens.

I enjoyed the 9 months I shot with the 2.5 skopar; until i replaced it with a 35mm summicron asph; which has become my standard lens.

A couple that haven't been mentioned but are certainly worthy of consideration:

Rollei 40/2.8 Sonnar HFT - it's LTM but you could file a LTM-M adaptor to show 35 framelines and you wouldn't be damaging the lens for potential resale value.

Voigtlander 35/1.2 Nokton - v1 in LTM and v2 in M mount. Quite large and heavy but if you're a photographer who's prepared to suffer for his or her art … :D

Pete.

Both versions are M mount :) first version had interference problems on some cameras. ..
