Will using a M39 to M adaptor let me collapse the original 50mm?

I'd like to get the original 50mm Elmar. I don't know if the M mount can collapse safely into an M9 (yes I've read the faq) or if I can get an M mount in the gold color. Would using an M39 to M adaptor allow me to collapse the lens without risk given that it should add more space between the lens and body? Although I'd prefer getting an M mouth though.

You can collapse an early f/3.5 Elmar (with adapter) into an M9. Buy an adapter that can be coded, but I'm not sure what you mean about the 'gold colour'?

Some of the lenses for sale are a gold or brass color rather than the regular chrome. I assumed they were a special edition or something since they are more expensive and seem more rare.

You should choose the adapter for 50mm, because of the rangefinder mechanism.

I think for Leica M one can collapse the lens as it is.

Ricoh warns in behave of this lens for its GXR M mount. Therefore I use it with a rubber ring, so that the lens does not collapse totally.

Not beautiful, but it works.

Maybe you mean Nickel plated lenses (which are earlier models), but if you really do mean gold then you're probably looking at Russian fakes.

Buy a genuine Elmar, the main concern should be to find a nice optically clear/unmarked example. The later Red Scale version is slightly better than the Black Scale lens, but they're usually more expensive.

Agreed, unless a genuine gold version bought from a specialist dealer (and is consequently very expensive) avoid any that are gold or brass, they are almost definitely fakes although the nickel plated Elmar's can be faked as well..

Try to find a recent one (after WWII) to get decent coating.

Also never mount it in collapsed state, collapsing when mounted is fine.

The LTM ones are much lighter and smaller than the Leica M mount ones, but they require an adapter and they do not have a regular E39 filter size.

Gold plated Elmar 50/3.5 can be found on e**y or elsewhere but i would much prefer the Elmar 50/2.8 v2 personally. High contrast, smooth bokeh, my favorite 50 in good light besides the 50/2 apo (perhaps). Available in black, all-black (including the tube) and silver.

This eBay listing shows the gold or brass Elmar 50mm I have been referring to. I am aware of the Soviet fakes but it does seem as though Leica made these brass colored ones since a few reputable resellers are selling them as genuine Leicas.

Errr, you do realise that auction is for a filter, not the lens?

The 'gold' you refer to on that example is just the brass metal showing as the chrome plating has been worn down.

For your own peace of mind just order one from a known Leica dealer, who won't sell you a dud.

No. Some of the photographs of lenses have a color cast that makes them look somewhat like gold. Others are simply worn through some (not all) of the nickel plating showing brass. Of course, there are Russian counterfeits that pretend to be gold Leica lenses. Be careful.

And what James said!

Small series of gold plated Elmar 50/3.5 have been made by Leitz as part of "Luxus" kits in the thirties actually. See for inst. Leica Luxus I Model A. Will be much more expensive than a 50/2 apo if you can find one though but genuine Leica lenses gold plated elsewhere can me found on e**y for those interested.
