Question for APO 50 and 28 elmarit/summicron users.

I'm not sure I have much to add here. I do agree with Algrove's feeling that the MM and 2/28 are a special combination. I didn't keep my MM long - and now regret having sold it. I was going back through my files last weekend and realised that my favourites were with the 28 Cron. On the M240 this is not the case. There I think the 35 FLE was my favourite lens.

I owned the 28 Elmarit for a while. It is supposedly better corrected than the 28 Cron. Ultimately I found I wanted and used that extra stop, and actually grew to like the Cron's personality, which imposes a touch more than the Elmarit's, but in a way I like. Compared to the 50 APO (which I also use and love), there may be times on the M240, when you look at the 28 Cron files and find yourself a touch spoiled by the 50 APO's near perfection. The 28 Cron feels a touch less sharp and punchy than the 35 FLE, and especially the 50 APO.

One minor point - the 50 APO has the best build quality I've felt on any of the modern M lenses. The 35 FLE and 50 Lux are close, then 28 Cron feels like a smidgen behind. To me, the Elmarit felt a tiny bit further behind that. I'm absolutely splitting hairs - the Elmarit is superbly well made. But if this matters to you, you might try physically handling the lens before deciding. Also, one or two shooters find it awkward because it is quite short (i.e. ergonomic trouble). I had no trouble. The 28 Cron is only a little bit longer from the flange, though its hood is pretty big, and does cut into the viewfinder. If that bothers you, it is another tick for the Elmarit.

Another minor point to consider is filter size. If you use a bunch of filters, the Elmarit and APO are both 39mm, while the 28 Cron is 46mm. Mightn't matter to you either.

But I should say, I consider these very minor points from a personal perspective. Either will do fine, and I think 28 FOV and M photography go so well together. Enjoy getting re-acquainted!

As much as i like the 28/2.8 asph, i find it a bit more harsh than the 50/2 apo personally. I have but a little experience with the latter that i've just received but i expect it to match the 28/2 very well if not perfectly so far. FWIW.

Lou, your comments are always very helpful :)... so I want to follow up on Wattsy's points above. I never liked the results on M9 from my 28 Summicron and sold the lens. Now I am wondering about this lens on M240, but I have been cautioned by Tim Ashely's review that expressed disappointment with this combination. The 28 f/2 intrigues me because of increased separation at close focus.

I shoot mostly with 24 Elmarit-ASPH and APO 50... wide open. M240 and MM. In your opinion, is the 28 in league with these two gems on the M240? Indeed, I have a rental 28 arranged for a trip in three weeks, and this thread seems highly relevant.

thanks,

Peter

Your upcoming remtal might solve your questions. Do I assume the rental is the 28/2.0? For me I very much like the 28/2.8, especially for MM work with orange E39 filters that I normally use makes it the perfect match for the APO50 on the MM.

Frankly I dislike the supplied hood that comes with the 28 cron as it always gets in my way. The diminutive look, feel, weight and ASPH optics of the 28/2.8, make it so easy to travel with on any journeys away from home.

I have a friend who swears that the 24/3.9 Elmar-M is for him the closest match to his APO50 on either his MM or M240.

Agreed, I have not shot anything that renders like my APO 50. On the M240, could you characterize the 28 Summicron rendering as being similar to any of the smoother, pre 2008 lenses?

No, I did not compare... I also can't comment on the Mandler-R lenses with the 240 as I used them only in film days... I liked the Lux 80 a lot, also the Macro 60 :-)

28 ASPH was first wide designed for digital. Small, light, inexpensive for leica, not ApO quality until you stop down . I will use mine at 4, 5.6, or 8 where it is superb on M8 and M9. Never tried it on film.

I have seen sample pics of 28 `Cron on the web and they were not sharp.

I suspect that many would agree, based on using the 24/3.8. It is spectacular in terms of contrast, sharpness and detail evenly across the frame. More so than any of the other Leica lenses I have used.

I agree with Rick and totally disagree with Tim's review discussed in the Forum at the link above. I think his was a dud or he just didn't get the lens.

I have both the 28 Summicron ASPH and Elmarit ASPH. The Elmarit is an excellent and punchy little lens but I'm with Algrove about the Summicron. It imparts something very special to the photograph which really has to be seen in print to appreciate. Most of my favourite photographs/prints were taken with this lens. I like it on the M9, Monochrom and M240.

Regarding comparative rendering with the 50 APO-Summicron I've no first hand experience with this lens but I do think the 28 Summicron pairs particularly well with the 50 Summilux ASPH.

Yes, I agree too. My Elmar 24mm is quite the match for my APO 50. I was asking Lou about faster lenses, however, because I am trying find a wide-angle that can offer some focus-point/ background separation (close focus, of course). At f/4, the Elmar never gives up definition for anything. It looks like the diaphragm on the Elmar can open a bit further (maybe f/3.4 or more), and I asked Leica about that a few years ago when I got mine... but they declined to offer a detailed answer on why the blades intrude so far into the throat of the focal point.

I have the opposite feeling so far but i don't use those lenses above f/2.8 that much so perhaps it is related somehow. To me, the 50/1.4 asph pairs better with the 28/2.8 asph but i will have to spend more time with the 50 apo to be sure i suspect.

But you can - if your M9 doesn't have leprosy. :p

Or you have an M240. :D

Just ordered the 28 Elmarit. Thanks to you all for your input!

Perfect decision imo, affording the 2/50A and needing a 28mm lens until there will be photos taken with the new Summilux.

Had my 24mm Summilux with me last time I was in Wetzlar and held it next to the steel 1.4/28, which is on display with the whole set under glass. No significant dimension difference imo. Wish there was info about the filter size of the 28mm Summilux.

Sorry, I probably didn't make myself clear:

I don't use them much in the range of f1.4-2.0

I've learned not to do hobbies half way. Always cost more when I do that.

Thanks everyone for your input. The 28 elmarit came yesterday and I was able to take the first pictures today. Couple to share:

The last one is the APO 50. (walkway with green glass)
