Leica M240 - The Grinch who stole my Christmas

New Leica user from around May 2014. Originally M8 and then very quickly moved up to the M240. Apart from the occasional freeze, its worked well, until today that is.

I recently updated to the 2.0.1.7 firmware, perhaps a little too quick. I was out today with the camera and shot about 30-40 images and then had a freeze. Tried to turn off, but as usual had to remove and replace the battery. Back to normal and continued to shoot again for about 10 shots before another freeze. This time the battery trick did not work.

I have tried a number of things. Complete camera reset. No improvement.

Tried to reinstall the firmware ver 2.0.1.5 - Will not allow

Tried to reinstall the firmware ver 2.0.1.7 - again does not do anything other than say update successful, after about 5 seconds.

Tried leaving the battery out for 3-4 hours - no change

So if anyone has any other tricks to try before I unfortunately have to give up using it for my first Christmas I would appreciate it. Is there a way to force a firmware update by holding down certain buttons. What about a more in-depth reset of the camera? Anything that will get me back and working for Christmas.

I have emailed the supplier in London, Leica in London and Germany, but at this time of year there is almost no hope of getting any help before the new year.

To say I am disappointed and feel let down is an understatement. I expected more from the purchase, having used various other camera manufacturers for over 15 years and never had to return a camera for a malfunction like this Perhaps I was just lucky.

Instead of devoting all that time to making pretty leather clad fashion statement cameras, perhaps a little more effort in the R&D / Electronics department would be a better idea. Surely I am not wrong to expect a premium product like the M 240 to be so unreliable in less than a year of operation.

Thank for the reply. I will call the London Leica store. The update was done over 3 weeks ago now, and I had been using the camera on various trips without issue.

Also I have 4 SD cards. Tried each one of them with no improvement.

2 off. Sandisk Extreme

I'd suggest the following if you don't find another solution:

- save your profiles on your PC or elsewhere

- format all your cards with SD Formatter

- don't use the same card for firmware update and pictures

- redo the firmware update with a fresh card

- reset the camera

- choose the faster card for pics and format it again in the camera before shooting.

Good luck.

I wonder if these freezes some people incur might be related to a defective hardware issue, because some people (myself for one) seem to never experience lockups with the M240 and others experience it a lot. Or is there some sequence or set of parameters that prompts it? For example I have never set mine to C mode (I shoot sequences with multiple presses of the shutter button), rarely if ever shoot DNG, and am using 2GB Sandisk SD cards I've had since 2007 when I got my M8. NB I have not updated to 2.0.1.7 (because evidently all it does is add the new Summarit lenses, which I don't plan on getting) but if your camera worked 3 weeks ok I doubt it's a bug in the firmware. Unless some sofware bugs need an incubation period.

Update on the situation. Again thank you to everyone who took the time to make suggestions. Many of which I did try.

Spoke to Leica Germany today and explained the fault. After a very nice woman took a note of the fault and the various attempts I had tried to rectify. She rang me back after discussing with the technical department and its going to have to be returned for evaluation and repair.

So, not a great time of year to lose the camera, perhaps I will take out the old analog cameras this year and give film a run for its money. Got to be cheaper than buying another M 240 at least.

Thank you and Happy Christmas.

Same thing happened to me this week. Been experiencing freezes on my M240 a few times over the past month or so. I tried turning on my camera last night and it won't work - buttons not responsive, LCD won't turn on. But the camera is turned on because the rear LED light is blinking. I tried pressing the INFO button while turning on the camera and the LCD turned on for 3 seconds before turning off again.

I have to wait till next week to send it in but am really bummed it is not working especially over Christmas.
