My beloved M-A got a new companion last week. Initially I thought I'll get a second M-A but then this black paint MP gazed at me, hope I'm not banned here. 🫣

A new silver chrome M-A joins its digital sibling and another rangefinder cousin. Was a difficult decision between choosing between the silver and black-chrome versions.

I'm sure this has been asked and discussed before, but I cannot seem to find a definitive answer. How durable is the black paint on new MPs?

I have searched the forum and can find answers from "scratches super easy and comes off the first time you use it" to "tougher than you think". Also there seems to be talk about changes that Leica has made in the last years. So what's the deal with current models and paint durability?

As an alternative: I'm sure it will be hard to see wear on the silver model, right?

Thanks!

It is tough.

I have had mine since 2020. I use it every day. It is only getting a little brassing on the advance lever where my thumb is and some slight brassing bottom plate.

You can be sure not to worry about it easily being brassed etc.

I just got my black M-A after lusting for one for years. Coming from M2 it's incredible how clear and crisp the viewfinder is in comparison. It's also nice to finally have 28mm framelines after eyeballing that for years (I was primarly shooting 28) :D

My M-A with new "main" lens - Nokton 28mm F1.5 - chrome brass version. Really like black body with silver lens look. I also have squarehood on it's way for me to complete the set.

Picked up the Biogon 35mm/f2.8 for the MA and wow, what a game changer. Whole viewfinder is now utilised and - more importantly so - that's the right focal length when I travel. Last time in Italy, had the 50mm & 21mm combination in Siena. So many shots just didn't work in those old streets/quarters. This time, 35mm in Spain, excellent fit. The M3 is still in Wetzlar for CLA, so once she's back, she'll get my 50mm, the MA will keep my 35mm, just feels natural.

Around 20 rolls after getting it (used) in December. Brass silver-chromed Nokton 28mm f1.5 + squarehood, brass silver-chromed shutter release button. I'm one-camera one-lens type of guy ;) Absolutely love it and looking forward for first real long trip with it later this year.

The film Ms with meters have a 2 position shutter release; first for a meter reading, second position for shutter release. My M2 only has the long throw (deep) for the shutter release. So my question is, does the MA have the same single position for the shutter release or does it have the two positions (because it might be an MP mechanics with electronic meter removed)?

The reason I ask is because I see photos above of MAs with soft release buttons but if the MA shutter release is like my M2 ( a smooth long throw ) how does the soft release help for slow speeds 1/30, 1/15, 1/8 when the M2 type release is so smooth?

Cheers, Lincoln

The M-A shutter release is a single short throw. Comparatively the MP only lights up the meter with the same travel that would have released the M-A.

I prefer the M-A for low light and slow shutter speed as the release hand action does seem to introduce less shake.

Sorry never felt the need for a soft release cap.
