Framelines are highly subjective but looking through a CLAed M2 with one eye and a M-A with the other... I'd say brightness and contrast are clearly better on the M-A. I would be curious to know if it's the other way round for someone...

It's pretty much a given that the M-A/MP/New M6 viewfinders are at the pinnacle of brightness and contrast in film M cameras. Doubt you'll find anyone arguing otherwise.

I don't recall every having an instance of focus difficulty due to the brightness or dimness of the viewfinder in any Leica camera I have used since 1975.  One of the classic advantages of a rangefinder camera over an SLR was its ability to focus in low light, particularly wide angle lenses.   Now I did encounter the infamous "flare" in M4-2, M4-P and M6 cameras (and those are the bodies Leica removed the condenser lens from to cheapen manufacturing costs).  The reason I will argue that the M2 is the best viewfinder Leica ever produced is the single frame lines for 35/50/90.  Those are my primary focal lengths although I own other M lenses as well.  I have never owned a 75 and prefer a 24 to a 28.  Perhaps the ultimate would be an MA with M2 frame lines?

I find the double frame lines present in Leica viewfinders since the M4P to be very distracting.  In fact, I prefer the viewfinder of the M5 (which is relatively cluttered) to be more desirable than the current standard frame pairs.  I can use them if I need to but much prefer the. simplicity of the M2.  And if you don't agree with me, that is fine and you can pick any viewfinder you like.

I see that MA's sell for $5695 new at Tamarkin.  I can pick up an MA in chrome in Hong Kong for $4100 and in black chrome for $4300.  I am thinking of getting one and if I later decide I only need one film body, I could sell it or my mint 50th anniversary M4 without any problem.  I am presently torn between chrome and black.  My M4 is black chrome but the MA is super sexy without any markings but the chrome finish is so traditional.

Maybe I am low IQ, but experience has taught me when it comes to Leica cameras and lenses, to let an authorized Leica dealer sell my equipment for me (in my case Leica Miami). Leica buyers are a peculiar lot. I have too many return a sell because they found a spec on the body somewhere. My dealer knows how to deal with those types far better then me.

Leica Store Miami do seem to provide pretty high trade in values - and they're my go-to dealer for purchases.

I've been thinking of trading in a couple of Leica lenses I no longer use but I can't think of anything I need - strange but true 🙂

They will also do consignment sales.

I did look through an M3 viewfinder once, and indeed, it was extremely nice due to the big magnification and the single frameline. Really lovely. The trouble is, I use a 35mm as my main lens, not a 50. And to make matters worse, my second lens is a 75mm. So, sadly, I'd have no use for an M3, no matter how nice it might be.

Seems like a real lack of M-A of late.

Mine just keeps on keeping on.

FWIW my favourite finder is the SBOOI.

The only x1.0 viewfinder I can recall ever using. No RF of course but sitting on top of a IIIc, it makes the world look better.
