M-P, repeating the "upgrade" scenario

I have a 2011 Landrover Discovery 4. The 2014 version of the same car has different badges, different interior and an extra gear.

I'm not upset.

Now, imagine the 2015 version of your car with a more powerful engine but without the extra gear and a windshield that is easily scratched.

You "upgrade".

Then the 2016 version comes out adding the same extra gear and the same unscratchable windshield you had in the 2014 version.

I would be upset.

A lot of this debate could be addressed if Leica offered options from the start, much like car companies. Then buyers could choose and pay accordingly. Perhaps the expanded Leica HQ will eventually allow for a more 'a la carte' approach to 'base' models.

For now, people still have choices….including to wait or not…as the 'upgrade' approach is fairly predictable, although the details are generally not.

I am also offering a M240>M-P upgrade program.

I only charge half of what Leica charges for the service, and my service and shipping times will guaranteed by much faster than what Leica ever can offer.

I have found an exquisite and exclusive type of black tape, that fits with the theme of the M240 perfectly. This specific tape was discontinued by the manufacturer some decades ago, but I had them remake it, just for us laddies.

We even take this upgrade program a step further, and will also cover the two buttons on the front of the camera with specially precision formed tape to make you and your camera totally stealthy!

It takes the manufacturer three months to bake, shape and form this special tape to our specifications and requirements. This is one sharp tape!

Sadly, the Sapphire display maker bankrupted themselves last week, so the Sapphire display cover will not be available through this upgrade program. Apple kinda screwed over the manufacturer with their exclusive contracts. Shit happens.

PM me if you're interested.

  • 4 weeks later...

M(240) with black dot and (believe me) a sapphire glass Giotos rear screen....

Had it since January. :)

Fair enough. But I wouldn't. I purchase on whether I am happy with what is there and not what might have been. The interior of my car is upgraded for 2014. I still like my car the same as before. I don't insist on upgrades to my computer OS and I don't rely on free upgrades to provide features I want. It's either good enough as is or it isn't. If it isn't I wait, or buy something else.

Leica's cycle is thoroughly predictable. Every 1.5 years is an upgrade. Every 2nd upgrade is cosmetic. It just takes a bit of restraint if you want to wait for the "P" version.

I had 2 M9's and an M9P. Now I have an M and a M-P. I don't hit the buffer on either. I haven't scratched either screen. The images look the same in Lightroom. The frameline lever is essentially useless when you have to power the camera up to use it. (I loved it on the M9).

I suspect the only reason the buffer doubled is because the new chip is the same price the old one used to be.

So are we halfway through the M240's lifespan? Is the next replacement arriving in just over a year or year and a half?

Been wanting to jump into Leicas, but I'm thinking I should hold off for the successor and for some 50mm Sumicron APOs to be a tad less expensive used.

Holy crap I never even though of that but you're right! Hahaha thanks man, you made me even gladder I got that demo M240 for $2K less than a new -P. Honestly one thing I really dislike about the M240 are those electrically lit framelines that power on and off (and are always too bright). If Leica decides to put a version of the M60 into production I hope it has the good old ambient illumination system. It worked like a charm for almost 60 years. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What features do you miss on the M typ 240? In the light of the shots you are missing by not having one...

Well I recently acquired a barely used Sony RX-1 that I've been shooting with. Quite an impressive camera and for only $1300! I'm kind of hoping that the new M will just blow me away haha, but I'm definitely hoping for it to be faster in terms of start up, maybe even better ISO performance in low light, maybe an even better sensor that can somehow wrangle out even more detail, and cleaning up of the video mode to the point where I'd even consider using it over a a new iPhone. :D

Don't get me wrong... the 240 is already making me want one... but I'm hoping a "short" wait will pay off since the RX-1 is holding me over for now.

Well mine go the M-P work over 2 days after I bought it, only cost a small bottle of acetone. I've had the camera for not far off 2 years and have never had a buffer problem even at weddings and the screen hasn't got a scratch on it. I did upgrade my Grey M9 to the M9-P chrome but then the M9 had a plastic LCD screen and the grey paint had started wear off almost immediately. I see no real photographic reason th justify the cost of this upgrade

Notes and tips.

1.The black electrical tape is on the body by the grip as because of the way it is designed the tips of your fingers and nails rub against the body and after a while the covering starts to get damaged.

2. Small clear plastic bump on the front button makes it a lot easier operate and feel.

3. Artisan and Artist strap doesn't self disconnect!!!

4. Soft release is held in place with small piece of PTFE around the thread otherwise it always comes loose.
