platypus Posted October 9, 2014 Share #3 Posted October 9, 2014 This is so impressive! We sadly had cloud cover for the event. It would be wonderful to see this shot larger.
fotografr Posted October 9, 2014 Share #4 Posted October 9, 2014 Beautiful job. I was hoping someone here would get up early and shoot this so I wouldn't have to. I'm curious about the variations in exposure time. Wouldn't they all have been the same?
pauledell Posted October 9, 2014 Share #5 Posted October 9, 2014 A magnificent series in one view. This is about the best I've seen. Paul
kdriceman Posted October 9, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted October 9, 2014 Beautiful job. I was hoping someone here would get up early and shoot this so I wouldn't have to. I'm curious about the variations in exposure time. Wouldn't they all have been the same? The moon was quite bright for the early images requiring a faster shutter speed, then, first as the eclipse covered more of the moon I needed longer times to get an exposure of the visible crescent. Then, as the moon was coming out of the eclipse it was brighter, but now lower in the sky and, like a sunset, dimmer and orange. Exposure times then were longer than in the depths of the eclipse, but still not as fast as when it was high in the sky. I did use a Canon 7D with a 400 mm lens set to spot metering to get accurate metering.
fotografr Posted October 9, 2014 Share #7 Posted October 9, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you. I actually had one of those "duh" moments a while after posting my question when I realized the moon would of course become dimmer as it went into eclipse. kdriceman Posted October 9, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted October 9, 2014 Thank you. I actually had one of those "duh" moments a while after posting my question when I realized the moon would of course become dimmer as it went into eclipse. And I incorrectly wrote "Exposure times then were longer than in the depths of the eclipse"when it should have been "Exposure times were shorter..."
