O ring disconnects from strap lug

The split rings on the two A&A silk cord straps I purchased last year are very stiff with poor temper allowing them to remain sprung slightly open. I suspect not all of the batches of rings A&A purchases are of equal quality. This is why I recommended the Countycomm titanium rings earlier in the thread.

Hi All,

I can't believe it, but this just happened to me...

I carry my My M240 in an Angelo Pelle half-case and leather strap, and I was just walking around in Edinburgh with my 50 Lux fitted (hood out..), when I felt a strange slithering sensation, and sensed the camera falling groundward. I think I must have tried to break its fall with my foot, but it still clattered across the pavement and I was frankly afraid to look.

Luckily the camera landed on the leather case, but the hood of the 50 Lux is now 'Ovoid', well-scratched and unable to retract. Once my heart started beating again, a few shots showed that all was in fact well with the camera and lens in use, but I'm still puzzled as to how this could have happened; the lugs are quite sturdy and the o-ring looked 'tight' and was difficult to re-attach - just as you would want it to be. I think I might experiment with something like a turn of 'fuse-wire' or similar around the o-ring to hold it tightly together from now on.

Incidentally, My 50 Lux is about 13 months old and was perfect until today; I don't know if Leica's Passport Scheme in the UK would replace a hood damaged in this way? I'm on holiday, so I can't look up the guarantee at the moment, but that would certainly give me some comfort.

Anyway, I'm not superstitious, but it is Friday the 13th...

I'm sure it applies in the UK too...

From the Leica Mayfair website: Leica’s unique UK 'Passport' which provides you with 12 months' complimentary accidental damage cover.

But the lens is 13 months old. The OP will need to claim this with his camera insurance or his travel insurance.

D'oh!...

If it's just the hood that needs replaced then I'm sure I'll be able to stretch to a new one without resorting to an insurance claim. I don't know how much it'll cost, but it couldn't be that expensive? After all its only a Leic... Oh. Right. Better prepare the credit-card....

The same thing happened to my 75 Apo-Summicron a year ago (for reasons not related to the O rings). Got the hood sent to me via my dealer and swapped it myself. The part cost me SEK 2000, which equals about USD 240.

So I had to file an insurance claim after all. Just for the part...:( I shudder to think what it would have cost if Solms had done the work as well. But this way I never had to wait for the lens to be returned.

Whats an alternative? aside from the leica strap.

These would be an alternative. I believe Hama make them. There are a number of sellers on Fleabay but quality is an unknown.

Do you have a link where can I buy them?

Afraid not. I found them in a bargain bucket at the Brighton Camera Fair for 20p. I have thrown away the packet but I am fairly sure the maker was Hama.

PS some on eBay here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Camera-Strap-Rings-D-Shape-rings-for-attaching-your-strap-/251743795500?pt=UK_Replacement_Parts_Film_Camera_Parts&hash=item3a9d19792c

The alternative is the split ring, and I'm not saying I don't use them, but I've been using split rings on many cameras for forty years and never had one disconnect.

If in fitting the split ring it doesn't feel like it is going to tear your fingernail off, or you genuinely need a screwdriver to prise it apart, then the split ring should be thrown away and a stronger one sought. The triangular rings that Wilson has shown are the traditional type supplied on Nikons. Nikons have a stainless steel insert pressed into the strap lug to stop premature wear on the lug, but Leica's don't, and especially with the older brass lugged M's a Nikon split ring can cause premature wear on the lug as the camera is only supported on the very edges of the lug by a triangular ring.

The Leica strap works perfectly if it is perfectly fitted, pull the strap tight against the lug as the plastic lock is pushed down and there is not much that can cause it to un-lock itself, and if it does the camera still has to negotiate the Leica ring itself before it can make a bid for freedom.
